Rough and Ready was settled in 1849 by a group of prospectors from Wisconsin who had headed west after news of Marshall's 1848 gold discovery in California. The party had named themselves the Rough and Ready Mining Company in honor of General Zachary “Old Rough and Ready” Taylor. A few fires burnt down the town and they gave up rebuilding. You can walk to the old cemetery on Stagecoach Road. The original blacksmith shop still stands and the Rough and Ready Grange is on our Driveway. Its a 15 min drive to the beautiful Yuba River and historic Covered bridge at Bridgeport. Three miles drive to Grass Valley and 15 min to Nevada City both with great shopping, wineries, breweries , cafes and tasty restaurants. Easy access to grass valley, Nevada city and the yuba river. There’s a bus that comes to the bottom of the driveway. Lots of people bike as well.
