This beautiful island is characterized by its beautiful coasts, with countless cliffs and bays and (at low tide) more than a hundred beaches. On the west coast steep cliffs and rugged surfing beaches and on the east coast many sheltered bays and enclosed beaches with turquoise colored seas. Monet was also inspired by it and made many paintings of the Belle-iloise coasts. A four-day grand randonner takes you on foot along the "route cotier" around the island. Belle Ile has an exceptionally mild maritime climate with many hours of sunshine but always combined with a delicious crispy sea breeze. In the evening it cools down pleasantly so that no air conditioning and closed windows are needed to sleep. However, you have to make an effort to get to Belle Ile. The car must be booked in advance for the ferry. No budget holiday flights land in the far region. There is, however, a small airstrip. And that's a good thing too. This way the island retains its peace and charm. No mass tourism and day visitors. It is an island of and for the French and mainly Parisians. You see few foreign tourists. It is an island for connoisseurs. But those who have taken the trouble always come back. This makes it also a very cultural island with many concerts and even operas in the summer months, but also many galleries and exhibitions. French live music is often played in the local cafés. The island "lacks" a disco. In the many eateries lunch and dinner is a culinary party. At bakers you can get all your baguettes in the early morning. Fresh vegetables and fruit, but also fresh fish and meat can be gathered at the daily market in Le Palais. Further on the island also the large French super and hyper marches. Also bicycle, scooter and car rental. Above all, Le palais and Sauzon have lively tidal ports with Breton fishing boats and sailing ships. You don't just play golf with a view of the Bay of Biscay, but on one of the holes you also literally skip the Bay of Biscay; so you take a lot of balls with you.
