GARDENS:- Appledown sits in a third of an acre with a front garden and a SECURE LARGE BACK GARDEN. Most of the garden is grass, mature trees provide shady spots and there are uninterrupted views across the farmland. The back garden and deck enjoys sun from late morning through to stunning sunsets. Garden furniture, BBQ and fire-pit are provided from late spring through to the autumn. Appledown is a no smoking and no vaping home. Because burning candles are a fire risk we have battery powered candles for you to use. Smoke alarms are fitted as is a security alarm. Access to all rooms and garden. Access to Appledown - key in lock box. Code will be sent the day before your check in. You will need to turn the alarm off. The code will be the same as the Lockbox. As you enter the front door there is a light switch to your left. The alarm keypad is situated behind the front door. We live and work on the farm which is roughly 200 yards up the private lane, happy to respect your privacy but also to be on hand to help your stay as comfortable as possible. If you require anything please text or walk up the track to the farm house. SHOPS: Kingsdown village has a hairdressers, a butcher shop & deli and newsagents that sells a range of groceries and has a post-office counter. The village is a 6 minute drive (1.3 miles) or a 15 minute walk via the footpath that takes in stunning views across the cliffs to France. PUBS: The Five Bells at Ringwould (1.3miles), The Kingshead, The Rising Sun and Zetland Arms on the beach at Kingsdown (1.5miles) are all within walking distance from Appledown. All of the pubs sell food. SUPERMARKETS: Deal has a Sainsbury and Aldi as well as Boots The Chemist CHURCHES (Website hidden by Airbnb) More details can be found in the Appledown Directory LOCAL THINGS TO DO: GOLF: The Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club is an 18 hole cliff-top course on The Leas. The Royal Cinque Ports golf-links, in Deal is roughly a 17 minute drive (5.7 miles). The Royal St George's Golf Club in Sandwich hosts the Open Championship in July 2020 and is approximately 25 minutes away by car (8.9 miles). The Prince's Golf Club in Sandwich has 27 holes, practice facilities and a centrally located clubhouse. WALKING in White Cliffs Country and Kent Downs - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From Appledown take the cliff top walk to the Dover Patrol Memorial at St Margarets Bay. Head on into the village of St Margarets or strike out for the shingle beach and quench your thirst in The Coastguard on the bay. Alternatively walk to Deal via the cliff top by dropping down into Kingsdown village and on to the beach. From here the route follows the Saxon Shore Way into Deal, it is flat walk and follows the coast line that takes in Walmer and Deal Castles. The Timeball Tower is best seen from the end of Deal Pier, a great place for brunch after the walk. CYCLING: Cycle routes around Dover, Deal and Sandwich can be found in the Appledown Directory. The National Cycle Route 1 from Dover to the Shetland Islands presents you with fantastic views of the famous White Cliffs of Dover. If you don't get as far as Shetland your bicycles can be locked in the garage. RUNNING: Walmer and Deal Seafront Parkrun every Saturday at 9am. HERITAGE: Dover Castle & The Secret Wartime Tunnels, Fan Bay Deep Shelter at Langdon Cliff, Walmer Castle and Gardens, and Henry VIII's Tudor Castle Fort in Deal. Further afield are the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury and the stunning architecture of a World Heritage site of Canterbury Cathedral that saw the assignation of Thomas à Becket in 1170 (30 minutes by car 20 miles). About an hour and a quarter by car(51 miles) is Upnor Castle, Rochester Castle and Cathedral as well as the Dickensian City of Rochester . Botany Bay in Kingsgate (between Broadstairs and Cliftonville) is sandy. Dumpton Gap between Broadstairs and Ramsgate is quieter. Ramsgate main beach is big with plenty of amenities. Rock pools can be found at low tide on Kingsdown beach and The Warren Beach (Folkestone) is used by fossil hunters. Behind the beach is The Warren Country Park where there are steep woodland paths and the chalk cliffs that are home to a wide variety of rare animal and plant life. Rare types of butterfly and approximately 150 species of birds can be seen. The views from the top of the cliffs are breath taking. Whitstable with its shingle beach makes for a great day out and the Lobster Shack on the beach has good seafood and local oysters. Closer to home (2 miles out of Dover on the road to Folkestone) is the drama of Samphire Hoe. A stunning location with outstanding scenery created from the 4.9 million cubic metres of chalk marl excavated during the creation of the Channel Tunnel. Feel the wildness, the peace and the quiet. Walk the wildflower pathways between the sea and the cliffs. Picnic and marvel. OUT & ABOUT FURTHER AFIELD LONDON: You can get from Dover Priory Station to St Pancras International Station in 1 hour and 5 minutes by using the Javelin High Speed Train. Stop and shop at Westfields Stratford City, or see the sites in London and take in the theatre. All possible as the last High Speed Train leaves St Pancras at 23.54 - CHECK train times on the day of travel. Away to CALAIS. The port of Dover is 15 minutes drive from Appledown. Buy a ticket in advance and look on the internet for deals and offers. Drive on in Dover and in about 1.5 hours drive off in France. Visit Cap Gris Nez and look back at the White Cliffs of Dover, take in Wissant, the Plage De Boulogne via Wimereux for lunch or spend the day on the beaches at Calais or in the town where there is a market and plenty of restaurants. Not a lover of the ferries take the Eurotunnel from Folkestone (19 miles) to Calais and arrive in about 35 minutes. Again book in advance for deals and discounts.
