MACO'S HOUSE: A lovely cottage built over Roman ruins in the Sabine countryside with spectacular views over the valleys stretching westward towards the setting sun and Rome. This cosy, rustic cottage is built over Roman ruins, in fact in the garden there are two Roman columns, most likely the remains of a gateway to the ancient Roman city of Trebula Mutuesca, known today as Monteleone Sabino. It is surrounded by a garden that borders on unspoiled meadows and woods stretching westward toward the Soratte mountain ridge above Rome. Beneath playfully pitched rooves supported by chestnut beams are two bedrooms, a comfortable living room with fireplace, two bathrooms and a spacious, well-appointed kitchen that looks out onto the garden. All floors are in terracotta, bathrooms lined in hand-painted tiles, and furnishings are simple and tasteful. Enjoy tranquillity and silence, taking off when you choose to visit the sites of Rome, Tivoli or Ostia Antica; make an excursion to Mount Terminillo (2100 metres) or Lake Turano (15 km), or even venture as far as Perugia or Naples and back the same day. Everything is close by, but perhaps you’d prefer to simply stay put and enjoy nature, read a book, take some sun or go out and pick a basket full of cherries, figs and apricots to make marmalade. EU ;-) A 500 m walk from the house brings you to the lovely ancient Roman church of Santa Vittoria and the ruins of the roman amphitheatre. In the village of Monteleone there is a tiny yet surprisingly detailed archeological museum with craft objects from the ancient Roman city of Trebula Mutuesca. Near Rieti (30 Km on the Via Salaria, an interesting medieval town) there are many beautiful medioeval Franciscan sanctuaries (Greccio, Fonte Colombo, Poggio Bustone) and the wonderful area of the lake of Piediluco, the Marmore Falls and Terminillo mountain (2500 m). 15 Km away (towards Rome) is Farfa Abbey, one of the most famous monastery in Europe. Little known on the tourist trail, the abbey hosts a magnificent Romanesque Cathedral and a stunning library of rare texts from medieval times. In recent times, British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver visited the abbey hoping to find inspiration in the long-famed medieval herb garden of the Benedictine monks... On the way to Farfa is the lovely medieval village of Frasso with its beautiful castle. The beautiful Villa Adriana and villa d'Este are 50km away. The property is nestled by superb countryside offering relaxing trails for walking and sightseeing. The Lake Turano, with its wild landscape and medieval villages, is only 15 km away. Castel di Tora is a medieval town with narrow alleys climbing up towards the castle and, just in front, is Colle di Tora, spread out on a promontory forming a small bay. Nearby is the convent of St Anatolia and the impressive ruins of the Castello di Antuni at the top of a rocky peninsula. You can also visit Ascrea on the lake with its Chiesa di S. Nicola, made of stone, clinging to the slopes of the mountain culminating at Navegna and Cervia. Nearby is the impressive castle of Rocca Sinibalda and the Abbazia of San Salvatore. And of course Rome (56 Km away), which can be easily reached either by motorway or by train from Fara in Sabina (efficient, cheap train service running every half hour except Sundays; 45-60 minutes to the Colosseum and historical center).
