Part of a working farm and forest, The Emerson House is ideally situated for your next Adirondack vacation. The newly renovated farmhouse sleeps four guests comfortably and features a well-equipped kitchen, a wrap around porch, pastoral views, an outdoor shower (in the warmer months) and laundry facilities. There are also plenty of activities and diversions in the surrounding area for your pleasure and entertainment. The Emerson House was designed and built by artist, writer, adventurer and political activist Rockwell Kent in the 1930s, originally for his son Rocky. It eventually became the home of Gladys and Tink Emerson, who managed Asgaard for more than four decades and raised their family here. In recognition of their years of hard work and devotion to the farm, we have carefully renovated their house, so it can be appreciated and enjoyed well into the future. Today Asgaard is a diversified family farm with a goat dairy and creamery at its core. Revolving around these activities are grass-fed and grass-finished beef together with pastured pork, poultry and eggs. You may be able to help with some of the farm work during your stay in The Emerson House, or you may choose to relax and watch from a distance. In either case, you will surely gain an appreciation for the sustainable agricultural practices that lead to healthy, delicious food. Kent devotees may also soak up the magic of the stunning landscape that inspired many of his paintings as well as the ambiance of his secluded studio, still on the property in its original condition. Beyond the boundaries of Asgaard, the Adirondack region offers a wide variety of year-round recreational and cultural pursuits. Options range from world-class fly fishing on the Ausable River, Olympic skiing at Whiteface Mountain and spectacular hiking in the High Peaks to current and classic movies at the Champlain Valley Film Society, concerts at the acclaimed Meadowmount School of Music and tours lead by Adirondack Architectural Heritage. The area also boasts several fine restaurants with cuisine featuring local ingredients. The Emerson House is fully equipped and available throughout the year for short and long-term rentals. Accommodations include two bedrooms and a full bath upstairs, a spacious entrance, sunny kitchen, open sitting room and half bath on the ground floor and a full basement with laundry facilities. There is a barbecue grill next to an al fresco dining area. Cheeses, meats, eggs and vegetables produced on the farm can also be provided. To ensure the welfare of our animals (and yours), no pets are allowed on the property. There is also no smoking anywhere on the farm. The Emerson House has neither a telephone nor a television. (Many consider this to be the most desirable feature!) Cell phone coverage is good with Verizon, a bit spotty with AT&T, not sure about the other carriers. There is a Bose Wave® system radio/CD/MP3 player. High speed internet is accessible in or close to the farm office. We live right here on the farm. We are available for guests when or should they need us, but we also respect their privacy. If guests have the time and the inclination, they are more than welcome to roll up their sleeves and help with some of the less-skilled farming activities like bringing in the goats to be milked, feeding the kid goats, collecting eggs or cleaning the barns. Au Sable Forks is a quiet hamlet in the town of Jay, NY. It offers a small grocery store, a pharmacy, a pizza shop, an art deco movie theater, a friendly tavern and a well-stocked wine and liquor store. The city of Plattsburgh (with a commercial airport) is about 40 minutes to the northeast, and the Olympic village of Lake Placid is about 30 minutes to the southwest. This being a rural area, public transportation is not wide spread. There is a bus that runs from Au Sable Forks to Lake Placid (with a stop at Whiteface Mountain) and another one that runs from Au Sable Forks to Plattsburgh (with a stop in Keeseville and at Ausable Chasm). However, we believe guests will get the most out of their visit to the Adirondacks if they have the use of a car. Check-in time is 3pm on the day of arrival (or anytime after). Check-out time is 11am on the day of departure. A later checkout may be possible if we don't have a new set of guests arriving on the same day.
