In the heart of Cornwall, the perfect location to explore the whole of what Cornwall has to offer! The Camel Trail extends through Nanstallon on its journey from Wenford Bridge/Bodmin, through Wadebridge onto Padstow, it is an 18 mile, almost flat, traffic free trail used by cyclists, walkers and runners, it is was originally a commercial railway line that transported fish from Padstow to London and also sand taken from the Camel Estuary to farms inland for use as fertiliser. China Clay was also mined in quarries and sent to Padstow for export by ship. The charming, cosy, traditional Borough Arms at Dunmere is the closest pub, which is a 10 minute walk away and serves a great range of local food and drinks. Ruthern Bridge is a sleepy wooded hamlet in the heart of Cornwall with early 15th Century bridge over the River Ruthern, a mile from the Camel Trail. This wonderful valley is an absolutely idyllic piece of countryside, one of Cornwall's best kept secrets and has some of the best inland walks in the county! Bodmin located 4 miles away was the former county town of Cornwall for many years and the only Cornish town to be recorded in the Domesday Book, which was lodged in the town's prison during the First World War. The county prison – Bodmin Jail is now a museum and open to the public. It was the first prison in the country to have separate cells. The Bodmin Jail experience is definitely one to visit with a highly recommended café and restaurant. You can walk to the jail along the camel trail in approx. 30minutes. Take a trip on Bodmin & Wenford steam railway – an exciting steam travel with a journey back in time on the Bodmin Railway. The Beacon Bodmins local landmark is a 144 feet tall obelisk in memory of Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert. The area around the Beacon which has woodland and traditional hay meadow was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1994. Nearby you have Bodmin Moor, bisected by the newly expanded A30 is home to one of Cornwalls Areas of Oustanding Natural Beauty. Reaching a height of 1,377 feet above sea level at Brown Willy, Cornwalls highest point. The heather covered granite moorland provides East Cornwall with the most stunning country views and rugged walks or even horse riding. Near Blisland you will find two of Cornwalls stone circles, the Trippet Stones and Stripple Stone Henge. You may even see sightings of the Beast of Bodmin moor, a phantom wild cat. The world-class, award-winning Camel Valley Vineyards is only about a 15 minute walk away, 2 minute drive. Where you can enjoy their wine tour and tasting with a stunning valley view for a lovely afternoon. In under 15minutes you can get to Wadebridge by car or 20minutes by bike on the camel trail. There is Bike Hire available here. The Royal Cornwall Show ground at Wadebridge hosts the county show every June, come rain or shine, and is opened each year by a member of the Royal Family. Cornish Farmers have had to diversify in recent years but the show has kept it's traditional roots with steam engines being shown next to the shiny new high-tech tractors. It's not every day you get to see formation JCB digger dancing in the main ring. The National Trust have three properties nearby: Lanhydrock House and gardens, Respryn, Trerice, Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps. Close by is the Colwith Farm Distillery where you can have a tour or try your hand at making gin or a spirit and also the Eden Project in St Blazey, famously built in a disused china clay pit, one of Cornwalls exciting attractions. The coastal town of Fowey is a 20 minute drive, offering fabulous restaurants, galleries and gift shops. A short car ferry across the river takes you on to Polruan. Daphne du Maurier spent her later years in properties in and around Fowey, a festival of her works takes place each May. If you are so inclined you can walk the coast path from Fowey to Charlestown although the quickest and easiest route is a 15 minute drive. Charlestown is a historic 18th century port made famous with the filming of Poldark and many other film sets. Whilst visiting Charlestown why not pop into St Austell which was once the major producer of the worlds China Clay, now with cheaper foreign imports the industry is in decline but The Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum set in two former working pits depicts the countryside in years gone by. Wet weather activities could include the visitor centre at St Austell Brewery, sampling beers and ales made on the premises. Continuing on from St Austell are The Lost Gardens of Heligan, which is Europe's largest garden restoration set in 200 acres a short drive towards Mevagissey an attractive harbour side village with a working fishing port. Within 20minutes from Tregarthen Cottages are some of Cornwalls premier surf beaches such as Watergate bay, Fistral, Constantine, Morgan Porth, any many more!! Accessible from your door are some superb Mountain bike trails for all abilities including Grogley woods, Cardinham woods, Lanhydrock Cycle trails, Hustyns woods and Bishops woods. Having a Cream Tea is a must down here in Cornwall – ensure the cream always goes on last! I can highly recommend the cafes at Cardinham woods or Lanydrock after a lovely walk! Or even the Camel Trail Tea Garden just over a 10minute walk away. Padstow is a charming fishing village at the head of the Camel Estuary. Just 30 minute drive away. It has some lovely sandy beaches and at least 7 bays within 5 minutes drive. It is the start or end point of The Camel Trail depending on your point of view. The 18-mile trail is flat and runs between Padstow & Wenford Bridge along the disused and resurfaced railway line. Bikes are available for hire. Padstow, now famous for being home to Rick Steins The Seafood Restaurant, amongst other properties the celebrity chef owns in the town. From Padstow you could take a boat trip across the Camel Estuary to Rock, and lounge on the beautiful beach that stretches all the way around to Daymer Bay. The National Lobster Hatchery neighbours Rick Stein's empire in Padstow. It is also a good base for exploring the South West Coastal Footpath, which covers its rugged coastline, and from which beautiful coves and spectacular views are worth seeing. Various water sports, fishing and golf are all on your doorstep. From Padstow you could take a boat trip across the Camel Estuary to Rock, and lounge on the beautiful beach that stretches all the way around to Daymer Bay. The National Lobster Hatchery which neighbours Rick Stein's empire in Padstow is also worth a visit.
