Historic Hudson Valley Mansion on 87 acres, stunning views
Set on a bluff overlooking the majestic Hudson River Valley, this 7-bedroom/6-bath fairytale 1837 mansion will take you back in history. The 87-acre property features forests, meadows, gardens, a wide array of wildlife and incomparable views. Lounge on the expansive porch and take in spectacular sunsets over the river and mountains directly to the west . A newly restored historic gazebo sits atop the highest point on the property. The view that inspired many a Hudson River School painter is yours to enjoy. Traditional parlor rooms boast working marble fireplaces, original wood flooring, overscale oak doors and comfy seating areas in addition to a large open gallery room with museum quality artwork. Original gilt framed mirrors, ornate moldings, carved details, stained glass and marble details distinguish the dramatic front hall and public areas. You could imagine the Astors, Livingstons or Edith Wharton characters having tea at Southwood back in the day. Three second-floor queen bedrooms feature high thread-count imported linens, antique furniture, outstanding artwork and private attached baths. Four additional bedrooms on the third floor have central AC and share two bathrooms. Total capacity is 10-12 guests. The decor reflects the wide-ranging taste of the owners, Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers, art collectors and long time Hudson Valley denizens. An eclectic mix of family antiques, unique artwork and contemporary furniture mixed with tag sale and auction finds creates a comfortable atmosphere for elegant but relaxed gatherings of family and friends. An adjacent fenced garden contains herbs, flowers and vegetables in season. Nearby farmer's markets feature fresh seasonal ingredients for cooks. Owners can recommend caterers. The charming country kitchen is fully equipped and has a view of the river and mountains. A gas grill is located just outside the kitchen. The artfully situated heated in-ground pool is a few minutes walk from the mansion and also has a breathtaking view of the river and mountains. The charming Buddha garden abuts the pool area. The pool house is a screened oasis from the sun and bugs. There is a changing room, toilet, small fridge, cold well water along with basic picnic supplies. Cajun style grill just needs charcoal! The owners keep horses, goats and chickens. The goats function as nature's lawnmowers, eating underbrush and poison ivy in areas inaccessible to traditional farm equipment. Ask about our two other rental houses on the property for accommodating larger groups. In total, as many as 24 guests can sleep at Southwood across the three houses. The estate is perfect for family reunions and corporate retreats.
