A picturesque 2-bedroom semi-detached cottage in the heart of the medieval village of Chilham, just a few metres from the historic market square with its Grade II listed half-timbered buildings and the White Horse pub. The house is situated in a quiet lane, which is part of the historic Pilgrim’s Way, leading off one corner the main square by the White Horse pub, opposite a steep bank with St Mary’s church at the top. Upstairs are two double bedrooms, a bathroom with separate shower and standalone bath. Downstairs is the sitting room, dining room, and fully fitted kitchen. There is a further room down stairs from the dining room with french doors accessing the rear garden. This room is also a home cinema with projector, electric screen, surround sound and reclining sofa. The landscaped garden, some 50m long, has a large area of wooden decking at the top with a large table and reclining chairs. Steps lead down to a further seating area with cast-iron table and chairs. There is off-street parking for one car at the front of the house. The road is narrow and one-way so it is not possible to park more than one car in front. However, there is free parking in the main square, although space is limited, and a large free car park at the bottom of Taylor’s Hill, just 10 minutes walk away. An attractive village near Canterbury, village is based around a square hemmed by half-timbered buildings. The wealth of historic architecture makes it one of the most visited places in Kent. The square is full of Grade II listed half-timbered buildings dating back to the late 15th century, the oldest being Tudor Lodge (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , now the Tudor Peacock which is planned to be restored and redeveloped to become a wine-tasting venue. On opposite sides of the square are Chilham Castle and St. Mary’s parish church. Chilham Castle is a Jacobean manor house built in (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) with a Norman castle keep at the rear built for Henry II in (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) The gateway to Chilham Park was built by Inigo Jones in (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) The parish church of St Mary dates to the 13th century, though it likely replaced a much earlier Saxon building with roots going as far back as the 7th century. The church is largely of English Perpendicular style and is well worth visiting for its large number of ornately decorated funerary monuments. Among these are monuments to Lady Mary Digges (d (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , the wife of Sir Dudley Digges, builder of the current castle. This grandiose memorial is composed of four seated statues representing cardinal virtues, posed around a central column that reaches eleven feet in height. The village has two pubs; the White Horse in the square dates back to the 16th century, a stone’s throw from the cottage, and serves food and drink everyday with live music at weekends; the Woolpack Inn, six hundred years old, is at the bottom of The Street, a short walk away, and has a fine restaurant and bar serving Shepherd Neame beers as well as accommodation. Both pubs are dog-friendly and the White Horse has its own resident canine, Colt, a large but very friendly Alaskan Malamute. Also in the square is Shelly’s Tea Room. A few minutes walk from the bottom of our road is Badger’s Hill Farm with a cafe, bar, extensive garden centre and children’s play area. In The Street there is a Post Office and small shop for everyday items. Further afield, near Chilham station, about 15 minutes walk away, is Chilham Farm Shop with a wide range of local produce including fresh fruit and vegetables as well as a garden centre. Chilham station is a 15 minute walk from the house and has an hourly train service to Canterbury (9 minutes) and Ashford International (14 minutes) with an onward service to London Victoria. From Canterbury or Ashford there is also a fast train service to London St Pancras International. At the moment the Eurostar service from Ashford International is suspended.
