Dust the dirt or snow off of your boots and step inside this 900-square-foot cottage to make yourself right at home. Settle into the living room and start up the gas stove to warm the cottage during downtime. There's plenty of seating for your group to gather for a game night or to watch a movie on the flat-screen Direct TV. Home-cooked feasts are sure to be a highlight of your trip, and this fully equipped kitchen has more than enough room for a few cooks. Set the main courses out on the counter as your companions finish setting the dining table, or grill your feast on the Weber gas grill just outside the kitchen under the covered porch. Two bedrooms offer sleeping arrangements for 4 guests, while a twin-over-twin bunk bed in the living room will comfortably accommodate 2 more. -- THE LOCATION -- Twenty miles up river in Winona is the only ice climbing opportunity this side of Duluth. Look up Ice Park , Winona to find out more. For you mountain bike enthusiasts, several scenic and challenging mountain bike trails are located in Winona, easily located on Google. The well known Root River Bike Trail has several trail heads from which to choose, the closest being in Houston, MN, 20 minutes away. The town of Lanesboro is the hub of this memorable paved bike trail, and offers bike rental, restaurants, and live performing arts at the Commonweal Theater Company. There are Root River canoe and tubing rentals in the summer as well. On the Wisconsin side of the river, the Great River State Trail begins in Onalaska, 15 minutes away. It heads up toward Trempealeau, home of the Trempealeau Hotel (outdoor concert venue) and Perrot State Park, known for it’s hiking with stunning views from the top of the bluffs. The La Crosse River State Trail begins in La Crosse and heads east, linking up with the famous Sparta-Elroy trail and it’s unique railroad tunnels. If you're in town during La Cresent's Apple Festival, you're in luck! Each year the festival includes entertainment, a golf tournament, orchard tours, a craft fair and more. Other great festivals include La Crosse's Riverfest, Oktoberfest, summer concerts and more. Every summer, Winona hosts several weeks of the annual Shakespeare Festival, the Beethoven Festival in addition to the annual Steamboat Days. For family-friendly entertainment, visit the Marine Art Museum in Winona, Children's Museum in La Crosse, and excellent restaurants as well as music venues just 15 minutes away! Great River Bluffs State Park, is only a 6 mile drive from the guesthouse. We consider it our “backyard” state park. Hiking trails take you to panoramic overlooks of the Mississippi River and surrounding bluff lands. For exceptional bird watching and trout fishing, another gem within a half hour drive is Beaver Creek State Park just outside of Caledonia, MN. A pristine trout stream runs through the park, and the hiking trails take you through some of the most diverse bird and plant habitats in the Driftless area. The La Crosse Community Theater performs throughout the year at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts in La Crosse. In addition, live performances in dance, music, and theater through Viterbo University can be enjoyed at the Weber Center as well as the Viterbo Fine Arts Center.
