Fallen Fence is one of five original Whittlesey Mansions dating circa 1750 to 1800. The Whittlesey family settled the area in the 1700s. During the Revolutionary War George Washington visited the family’s tavern, (an historical landmarked tavern just down the road). Washington, Ct, was the first town to be named for the president after the Revolutionary War. Elijah Whittlesey, who grew up in the house (and who’s aunt and uncle owned the inn that Washington visited), went on to serve 5 terms as a U.S. congressman and he served under 3 U.S. presidents including President Lincoln (as treasury secretary) with whom he oversaw the design construction and funding of the Washington Monument. This historic center hall colonial is located on 40 acres in glorious Litchfield County, CT. The spacious home has retained much of its original charm but with modern day amenities. The large formal living room has a wood burning fireplace and off that room pocket french glass doors lead to the kitchen and a set of french doors to the four season sun room with heated floor, breakfast table and lounge furniture. This utterly whimsical property is completely private for your enjoyment.
