See gold coins- pieces of eight- and other artifacts inside, and watch as divers bring up treasure near the surf line. To the North, learn about and walk among various vehicles of the early Space Race at the Kennedy Space Center. See Space Shuttle Atlantis up close, walk around the various launch vehicles, and learn about the work that has gone on in the space industry. 1 hour North. On the way, stop at the Original Ron Jon’s Surf Shop and browse the hundreds of bikinis and swim trunks, surf boards, sunglasses. Also Cocoa Beach Pier has dining and shopping, wrapped in entertaining boardwalk experience. Cocoa Beach, 1/2 hour North. Walk down to the Melbourne Pier and see the size and location of early settler houses. Watch as fishermen haul in their catch from the Pier, or join in! 10 min walk South of the Launch Pad will bring you to the Pier, and subsequently the shops along Ocean Avenue. The Melbourne Supermarket has a wonderful European charm with both American and international flavors, stocking an incredible variety of sodas, and wines. In the back of this small grocery is a terrific pizzeria, turning out pizzas worthy of Italy. Grab the prime cuts of steak in this shop, and take back to grill. Enjoy local dining establishments along Ocean Avenue, such as Djon’s Steak and Lobster House or Ocean 302 Bar and Grill. Drive North along A1A for a more casual dining selection, such as the Original LongDoggers, Skewers Mediterranean Grille, and the Copperhead Tavern. Ample sandy beaches provide for sand castles, catching a tan, watching the launches from Cape Canaveral, metal detecting, strolling for exercise, surf fishing, surfing and the like. There are a few beach parking venues are available all along the beachside. Sebastian Inlet State Park. This jewel has a shallow lagoon in which the dolphins and manatees come in to check swimmers out and because the water is shallow, it is perfect for little ones to play, or for reclining and enjoying the warm lapping water. A few steps away, in the shop near the beach, enjoy a cool drink or a burger or brats. People fish from a walkway under the causeway, and boats ride the waves while juvenile sea turtles eat sea grasses right below the path. This sweet spot is 25 min drive to the South.
