The Bonthrone family founded Newton Brewery in the 1600’s and brewing ceased in 1916 but they continued Malting until 1960. In 1947 it was acquired by The Distiller Company Limited and the brewery is still in tact at the boundary of the gardens by way of the Malt Barn Inn.
