About Flounder House Built between 1816 and 1822, Flounder House exhibits some fascinating architectural features, many of which are unique to Old Town in particular. Its dramatic single sloped roof and high, windowless wall were designed to follow the strict building ordinances in place in Alexandria at the beginning of the 19th century. Though the Flounder style was common here during this time period, very few structures remain, with Flounder House one of only 22 examples in Alexandra. Its historic significance cannot be overstated. In fact, in 1939, architectural historian Brown Rolston called this property “probably … the most important piece of American architecture extant.” The home received the highest rating for historic architectural significance in a 1970 report by Russell Wright, charged with evaluating the character and quality of properties in the area. On the home’s second floor, you’ll find the master bedroom, a bright, cheerful haven bathed in natural light. It boasts a king bed, a flat-screen TV, and a wood-burning fireplace. Down the hall is the office/third bedroom, with tasteful built-ins that add character.
