House on Little River / Writer Retreat
Rustic cottage on on Little River, a lovely trout stream that swishes around rocks. Great place for kids to play! Lake across the street. Canoe. Woods all around. Very quiet except for hush of river. Nice deck extends almost to the river. Charcoal grill. In all ways cozy and pleasant. Nice for couples, writers, artists, travelers, families, and pets—a place for quiet, peaceful people. About the lake: There's no beach. Access is just a narrow path down to the water. You have the house to yourself except, on a basement level, there is an art studio that might have one person in it, quietly painting a picture. But that space is completely separate from the guest space, with its own separate entrance. You won't need to go there, and no one will need to go into the guest area. There is a lockable door between the two areas. The living space is on two floors. Downstairs: living room, dining room, kitchen, all essentially one space. Upstairs, a bedroom with a queen-size bed, a loft area with two single beds, and a bathroom. Please note that the only AC is a window unit in the bedroom. It suffices for cooling that room only. It is removed in October and reinstalled in May. The space is NOT "childproof." Guests can drive right up to the door, but there are about 10 stairs up to the door. Exception: If there's a lot of snow, a car can't get to the cottage until our snow plow guy gets here, so it will be a 200 ft. walk. We live on the premises, about 200 ft. away, so most of the time someone is around and more than willing to help with whatever. Be advised that guests must be quiet and peaceful. (Kid noise is OK, but no drunken shouting, no loud music, stuff like that.) We'll leave you to yourself, but we usually come check on you after the first night, just to see if you have any questions or problems. We like dogs, and dogs are very welcome. HOWEVER: We cannot accept vicious dogs. If we cannot pet a dog after a reasonable introduction, the dog cannot stay, not even if the dog is kept on a leash or in a cage. If you have a dog that's inclined to jump on a couch, please bring a couple of sheets to protect the furniture. No dogs on beds! In that it's easy for a dog to get wet/dirty/muddy here, please bring towels to clean said dog. Our towels are for people only! We live in a rural area surrounded by woods and water. It's quiet and safe. The amenities of Norwich, Conn. are 15-20 minutes away. There are two big casinos about half an hour away. Mystic Seaport is about 40 minutes away. No pubic transportation, but plenty of parking! No arrivals on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. If you're staying a long time and would like a cleaning service once in a while, we can have someone come in for $85. Rental price includes clean sheets once a week. In the winter, you can feed a wood stove, if you want, but a gas heater is the main source of heat. The building has no a/c, but thanks to shade and water around, it never gets really hot. Bedroom has a small a/c, but it will cool only that room. We welcome pets and children. If you'd like to make a small campfire to cook marshmallows or weenies, you can do that. • Wifi speed is around 57 mbps. • You will be glad if you arrive with your food rather than arrive and then have to go out to buy food. We'll give you directions to the nearest supermarket, but it's 15 minutes away. (Stop & Shop in Norwichtown, just off Interstate 395.) • It's easy to miss our driveway, and it can be hard to see the number 18 painted on a rock at the end of the driveway. The thing to look for is the little bridge. If the lake is on your right, the driveway is on your left immediately after the bridge. If the lake is on your left, the driveway is on your right, just before the bridge. It's a long driveway going down hill. There is a large birdhouse / lighthouse (with a little light on top) on a tall pole near the road in front of the house. • If you want to grill, we have a charcoal grill. Don't forget to bring charcoal. • We provide towels and soap. Towels are for people, not dogs. • The kitchen has most of the basics you'll need, such as salt, pepper, sugar, coffee machine filters, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, napkins, dish soap, cleaning supplies, etc. If you want to know about something specific, just ask. • We provide sheets, towels, soap, toilet paper. You get clean sheets and towels once per week, but after a week, you have to make your own bed. • Three things we don't have: a television, a dishwasher, a washing machine. There is a laundromat about three miles away. • In the event of a snowstorm, we will try to get plowed out right away, but we can't promise it. * Airb will block our ph# if we write it here, but try figuring out this puzzle: First, an infinity sign stood on its head Then the number that rhymes with "pick up sticks" Then the one that starts with Z. Then the number of states in the U.S. Then the one that rhymes with Hen. Then that infinity sign again. then one that sounds like Tree then the one that's for "buckle my shoe." You may need this number in case you can't find the house. You can text to this number.
