The OLD SCHOOL HOUSE is just two blocks from downtown Hallowell, which is nicknamed the "New Orleans on the Kennebec." The city is a regional center for the arts in central Maine, with renowned art galleries, performing arts theaters, studios, festivals and local artists. Hallowell is home to renowned taverns and restaurants, with the downtown area having a high concentration of eating and drinking establishments. This is a three-bedroom SECOND floor apartment with a sweeping river view. The space is a second floor apartment with three bedrooms, galley kitchen, full bathroom, living/dining room area with gas fireplace and balcony with a great view of the Kennebec River and park. Some of the stairs to the second floor are the original 200-year old stairs that may be difficult for an elderly dog to climb. There is access to a complete gym in the building next door with sauna and seasonal hot tub and access to complimentary bicycles and kayaks for stays of two nights or longer. The apartment has all the amenities of a five star hotel: decorative L.L. Bean furniture, fresh flowers in season, top of the line L.L. Bean bedding, fully equipped gym with four workout stations and personal TVs, large screen TV in the apartment with local channels and amazon prime loaded, a welcome gift and extreme cleanliness. The Old School House was the second school built in Hallowell and the first to enroll a black child in Maine. Many of the children who attended school also worked an the old cotton mill, now called Cotton Mill Apartments. The post and beam building was built by the original owners of the mill. Hallowell is two miles from the state capitol, three miles from I-295, three miles from the airport, seven miles from the Concord bus station, and six miles from the Civic Center, the University of Maine and Augusta Crossing (the mall). Complimentary laundry for stays of five nights or longer. The front door and door to the gym have digital locks for 24-hour access. Bedrooms have chain locks on the inside. Guests will have access to a fully stocked kitchen with numerous small appliances. The cook stove is natural gas. In the gym there are two ellipticals, one tread mill, one bicycle and free weights. Each piece of equipment has its own personal TV. Laundry is complimentary, but limited to two loads per stay of five nights or longer; there is a dryer and washing machine. Laundry soap is provided. TVs are loaded with Amazon Prime and Spectrum internet. An Orbi mesh system provides superspeed internet.yes I live at 10 Academy St if you need assistance. Hallowell is a small coastal community on a tidal river and estuary. The house is within two blocks of downtown in a quiet residential neighborhood. No steep hills to climb. Many walking and bicycle trails nearby. Vaughn Brook and trails is a short walk up Second Street. The carriage trails are known as "hobbitland," characterized by granite bridges and gurgling waterfalls. There are also trails around Jamie Pond and the Hallowell Recreation Area where the town beach is located off Town Farm Road. A map of all trails is hanging in the gym. For guests who stay two nights or longer, complimentary L.L. Bean bicycles of all sizes are available for getting around. Complimentary L.L. Bean kayaks and paddleboards are available for use on the river that stretches from Waterville to the coast. It is an easy trip down or up the river to explore the historic downtowns of Augusta and Gardiner. Kennebec Explorer provides bus service and has a stop in Hallowell. There are also taxis and ubers. The expectation is that the guests will clean up after themselves before they leave. You do not have to clean the linens or towels but you do need to do spot cleaning. If you cook, you need to clean the stove, microwave and oven. You need to clean the dishes, pots and pans and put them back. The basic principal is to leave no trace. During the season for guests who stay two nights or longer, we have complimentary L.L. Bean bicycles, paddleboards and kayaks to use on the Kennebec River Rail Trail and Kennebec River. A liability release form must be signed prior to use. The rail trail stretches along the river through Hallowell for about ten miles from Augusta to Gardiner. The boat landing is just one block away and we have a kayak cart for getting the kayaks and paddleboards down to the water. The Kennebec River is a wonderful place to kayak or paddle board and an easy excursion to Gardiner or Augusta to explore their historic downtowns. There are eagles and ospreys soaring and sturgeons jumping. There is also a swimming area at the Hallowell town beach about three miles inland. The hot tub is also seasonal. It is generally closed from mid January to April. We do offer cmplimentary pet sitting We believe in protecting the planet by conserving resources. We have temperature monitoring and ask that you keep the temperature below 72 during the winter and above 60 in the summer. Otherwise an extra fee of $25 per day will apply
