Fully furnished kitchenette (microwave, toaster oven, large induction plate, small refrigerator, and sink), dining area, and fireplace in the large common room. Good wifi but no television. Large dry patio with 180° view of the Black Mountains (including Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain in eastern America), the Blue Ridge, and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Less than 10 minutes to shopping and good restaurants in Burnsville, a picaresque and friendly country town. 2 minutes to a fun children’s playground and Parkway Playhouse (theatre). Easy drive through our beautiful mountains to galleries and over 100 arts and crafts studios. 15 minutes to dark sky astronomical observatory. Only 45 minutes to Asheville—beer, restaurants, music, nature center, art, crafts, gardens, Biltmore House. 80 minutes to Boone. Burnsville is a great central starting point for outdoor activities and for attending mountain festivals, music performances, and plays. Close to Mt. Mitchell, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Roan Mountain (but they may be closed in winter) and to national parks and state and national forest parks and campgrounds. Close to golf courses, waterfalls, excellent hiking trails, and cool fishing and wading steams. Challenging biking on both roads and trails. 1-2 hours to great outdoor adventures: rafting, tubing, snow skiing, horseback riding, zip-lining, and hiking (we like the short hikes to waterfalls and to high bald mountains on the Appalachian Trail!). 2 hours to Cherokee and the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We are knowledgeable about the area and can give good advice about things to do. We live upstairs and are usually around, but the guest suite has a separate entrance so we do not need to interact with you if you need your privacy. We have a Ring doorbell on our front door, so we can see when you drive down the driveway, but there are no other cameras or microphones on the premises. Access to large, private, dry patio and to small grassy yard. Landscaping is ongoing but all areas are available to guests and kid-safe. Stroll the town square. See the Nu-Wray Inn, built in (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) Elvis slept there!) and the statue of Otway Burns, naval hero of the War of (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) and supporter of the founding of Yancey County. Check out West Main Street: visitors center, restaurants, Toe River Arts Gallery, history museum, movie house (on weekends), stores (clothes, gifts, antiques, music, books, toys). Visit Mt. Mitchell, the highest point in eastern America. Tour arts and crafts galleries and studios; start at the Toe River Arts Council Gallery on West Main Street and the OOAK Gallery in Micaville. Go on a hike to a waterfall or mountaintop (see top hikes). Have a country or café breakfast (see list of restaurants). Enjoy a beer at the Snap Dragon or the Homeplace Beer Co. Eat lunch or dinner at a local restaurant (see list of restaurants). Follow one of the “Quilt Trails” as a good excuse to drive on a beautiful country road. Attend a bluegrass, roots, country, or gospel musical performance at the Town Center, town square, local restaurant, the Parkway Playhouse, or other venue.
