Ghent Retreat--Charming, Quiet, Spacious, 15 acres
Columbia County, 2 minutes from Art Omi, 5 min to Chatham, 10 min to Hudson. 3-bdrm, 2-bathroom home with expansive land, quiet, and charm. 15 magical acres with 2 ponds, "specimen trees," lawn, and private woods. Renovated farmhouse, combining privacy, comfort, and modern utility. Great for one or two people, or family of four. Sorry, but we do not allow pets and we don't have AC. This is our second home, where we spend weekends and vacations when not renting it out. Since 2014, we have renovated and restored the entire house and landscaped the area around it. We leave you alone but answering your questions. We take great care of it and we want responsible guests who will take good care of our home. We are part way down a quiet residential road in the hamlet of Omi in the village of Ghent. Despite the secluded location, we are minutes away from amazing farm stores, Art Omi, Hudson, Chatham, Kinderhook, hiking trails, and more. We are 30 minutes from Catamount and 40 from Great Barrington. You could hole-up, relax, work remotely on our fiber optic WiFi, and explore the local area. We also have satellite TV and a printer connected to our WiFi network. The house consists of two parts, the "old part of the house," which was built in the early 1800's and the "new part of the house," which was built in the early 1990's. We gut-renovated and reinsulated the old part of the house, built a new kitchen, and installed new electrical and plumbing throughout the house. We repainted and refinished the new part of the house. The kitchen-living room has 15-20 foot high ceilings, natural light, a wood-burning stove, and a cozy sitting area. Off of the kitchen-living room to the left as you enter are the pantry and guest bathroom, which has an original clawfoot tub. Off of the other side of the living room is the guest bedroom, which has access to stone patio out back. As you walk from the kitchen into the dining room, you enter the "new part of the house." This part of the house contains the master bedroom upstairs; and the second downstairs bedroom, which has a trundle bed. If you have two kids, depending on their ages, they can sleep together in the bedroom with the trundle bed or split up and use both downstairs bedrooms. Some couples prefer to stay in the first bedroom downstairs off of the living room. With windows and French doors throughout the house, we get natural light all hours of the day. You have easy access to the deck on both floors from all of the bedrooms. You access the back stone patio through the living room. The house sits on the south end of our 15-acre lot. our closest neighbors are about an acre away across the creek and they are rarely there. We have a large back yard, with sledding hill, that ends at our back woods. From there, you can walk a loop trail up to our second pond. We designed, built and equipped the kitchen for people who love to cook, like us. We leave the kitchen stocked with staples, spices, and condiments. We try to leave coffee and fresh milk and eggs. Some of the best farms and farm stores of Columbia County are within minutes of our house. On the flip side, you can quickly reach the Dairy Queen in Ghent, Price Chopper in Chatham, Walmart in Hudson, and all of the restaurants and shops of Chatham, Hudson, Kinderhook, and Valatie. We hope you enjoy it! You have access to our whole house and land, which is clearly marked. We will send you a guide to the house before you arrive and we will leave a printed copy here. We live in New York City and we are not here, but we have a caretaker who lives nearby. We leave keys in a lock box and you let yourself in. You will have complete privacy and our place is very peaceful. We are great hosts, we believe, but we are not the freshly basked cookie types. We also ask that you treat our home with care and respect. If there is an emergency, dial 911 and contact us immediately. If you break something or if something does not work that's serious, please contact us too. However, you should be able to figure most things out. During the winter, we can turn on the heat remotely before you arrive so the place is warm and toasty. We are in a perfect location in Columbia County. We are 1/4 of a mile up the road from Art Omi Sculpture Park: you can walk there from our house and they have great drop-in art classes for kids. We are a few minutes drive from Little Ghent Farm, Kinderhook Farm, Berry Farm, and Tierra Farm. We are 15 minutes from Hawthorne Valley Farm, which is a great place to stop and pause, before coming to our place. We are 10 minutes from Chatham, Valatie and Kinderhook, and roughly 20 minutes from Hudson. We are also 30 minutes from the Catamount Ski Area. We are 20 minutes from Spencertown, another 5 to Austerlitz and about 40 minutes to Great Barrington. We are also 40 minutes from the Albany Airport and 30 minutes to downtown. The best way to get to our place is to drive up the Taconic. You exit left off the Taconic at Harlemville Road, just after the Harlemville/Philmont Exit. You can also exit there, stop at Hawthorne Valley Farm. When leaving HVF, you go left and continue left up the hill on Harlemville Road, crossing the Taconic and continuing on. Coming from North on the Mass Pike, you exit for the Taconic and get off at Chatham. You then take State Road 66 to us. Train service to Hudson from Penn Station is great. We are a solid 45 minutes from the Albany Airport. There are also 2 airfields near us if you fly a private plane! We have a wonderful heating system and we can turn it on before you get there. We also have a wood-burning stove that makes the house super-toasty. However, we do not have air conditioning. The house is well-insulated so it stays cool during the day and it gets cool at night. However, it can get warm on a hot, muggy day. Finally, we are 1.5 miles away from the Kinderhook Sportsman Club, a private rifle range, which has been operating for 50 years. They practice Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings. During the winter, there is rarely any activity and for the most part, the sounds coming from the Club are very light (During the summer, because of all of the trees and distance, the sound is muffled). Our two young boys play in the yard and are not bothered by it (if practice is underway) and no guests have mentioned it or been bothered by it at all. Still, if this will bother you or your family, you should consider it. On the more charming side, we have plenty of wildlife, without any bear-spottings. We get wonderful birds in our trees, have turtles, frogs and fish in our ponds, and see deer, who run away into the woods. We've quietly looked upon lots of bunnies, beautiful butterflies, and even a flock of 30 wild turkeys has passed through.
