At the end of your stay, just put the key in the same place, and leave the cottage unlocked as you found it or give it directly to one of us. • One of us will usually be around or close by if you need assistance with anything. We love visiting with guests, but will completely respect your privacy. We're also very happy to share our (so far limited, but growing) knowledge of the area--just ask! • This is seriously TEXAS. Small town, big heart. New Ulm has a couple of restaurants. The most popular local stop is the Texas Star Cafe, which offers terrific breakfasts, Texas-style lunch, and dinner on selected evenings. In town is also a new cafe, The Leaky Bucket, serving Cajun-style fare and amazing desserts. • More on restaurants: Just down the road is Pivo's Ice House, which as a great selection of craft beers, awesome chicken wings (and other food) and a fabulous view at sunset. Further down the road in Fayetteville (approx. 12 miles from the cottage) there are several more restaurants, included the recommended Joe's Place. Just a jot further down the road, you will find numerous restaurants in Roundtop. In the other direction, Columbus also has quite a few restaurants, including some outstanding German food (Schobels). • If you want to cook, the Hometown Hardware store in New Ulm actually carried food basics, so if you need milk, cheese, eggs, butter, bacon, potatoes and other things, this would be your first stop. North about 5 miles on Hwy 109 is Lindemann's, a more general general store in Industry, Texas, which carries "almost everything" including fantastic BBQ, and terrific local meats, rubber boots, guinea hens and chickens, saddles, and, of course other groceries, like milk, eggs, yogurt, snacks, beer and wine, avocados, and much more. And they serve it up with a smile. • If you must have a supermarket, you can find both HEB and Brookshire Brothers in Columbus (15 miles). • And of course, there are nearby international venues for antique shopping in Roundtop, Warrenton, and Wynedale. There is no transportation but your own. • There is an abundance of wildlife around, and millions of stars in the night sky. Guests should feel free to wander around, even at night, but are reminded that this place is best for those who love nature, and may not be the best place for those who are most comfortable when they are distanced far away from nature. • Covered footwear is encouraged--stickers do find their way onto the property, and grass can be taller than the typical manicured suburban lawn, and could be at the stage of making seed heads, the seeds of which at least one guests mistook for fleas (apparently not noticing that the so-called "fleas" did not move) . Also, we are required to inform our guests that, as this is the country, various other less-than-welcome inhabitants of the Texas countryside could be present on the property (for example, ants, bees, frogs and toads, wasps, raccoons, caterpillars, spiders, opossums, snakes, house flies, armadillos, striped bark scorpions (which have a sting similar to a honeybee, but not as long-lasting), bats, turtles, and other species that may not be welcome). Oddly (and happily), mosquitoes seemed to have decided to give our place a miss. • There are two cats (nominally) on the premises, one of which you'll probably never see (shy). The other feels it's her duty to greet guests. • There is also a horse on the property; she is friendly, and a shameless beggar, but guests are asked to please refrain from giving her food without prior permission (hint: apples and carrots in limited quantities will usually be okay), and from entering (or allowing pets to enter) her fenced-off area. • It is generally blissfully quiet around here, HOWEVER, there is a train track down the road a bit, so the occasional train horn is heard (but quickly goes away). Also, the cows in the next pasture sometimes feel the need to MOO, loudly. • Regarding wifi access, according to the speed test, our dl speed is typically between 13.6 and 14 bps, which is characterized as "snappy" to "high speed" wifi by Airbnb. Our guests, have used the cottage for things like long-distance learning classes, streaming movies, video chats, business meetings, etc. However, given the number of variables that can affect telecommunications, we are not able to guarantee perfect quality connectivity 100% of the time.
