Enjoy wide open space for children to run and play. Sit on the front porch and toast the sunset. Remember to bring your own groceries before arriving. Our manual will fill you in on local interests. Original artwork on walls, a well-equipped kitchen/a gas grill for outdoor cooking is available. Books, games and toys are available. Hike outside and enjoy the fresh air. The WiFi here is now terrific! The third bedroom will be available at the end of April. This is a comfortable house with lots of history. Generations of the Ferguson family have lived here. This farm has been in the Ferguson family since the early 1700s. There are cows and mules grazing in the fields. There is a hand painted mural in the den. The view, clean air and beauty of the surrounding landscape make the stay worthwhile. If you appreciate history, art and nature, this is the place for you. Our farm is on the NC Birding Trail and there are painted bird plaques on the log cabins at the village for a fun "search the birds" game for children. The farm is great for those who want to give their children a country experience. We have our farm protected from development by having it on a land trust. We are only stewards of this beautiful place and want it preserved for the future. We want there to be space where wildlife can continue to live undisturbed. This area is designated as one of the best places in the USA for observing the heavens (bring a telescope!). By Spring 2022, we hope to have a third bedroom restored and ready for occupancy. Keep checking! This room will have a twin bed and a three-quarter bed. There is a side entrance to the right of the house. At this time only a section of the house is available: two bedrooms, kitchen, den, laundry room, 1 full bath, 1/2 bath and a deck. There is no one living on the premises. The front porch of the house features antique wicker rocking chairs that once belonged to one of the Ferguson aunts who lived here in the early 1900's. The other part of the house is used for Whippoorwill Academy and Village board meetings and storing files with historic information of the area. In the coming year, the Martines hope to open more bedrooms after remodeling has been completed. Guests will be given my cell phone number. We live close by and will be able to come down immediately should a problem arise. We are not in a neighborhood. We are very rural with a very small village nearby. However, the house is located beside Whippoorwill Academy and Village(a historic and cultural setting with 12 old buildings that have been moved to the farm and restored. It is open every third Saturday from April-October. It is also owned by the Martines. This farm is part of the North Carolina birding trail. No public transportation, but we are a 15 -20 minute drive to Merle Fest; 20 minute drive too Wilkesboro or Lenoir; 45-50 minute drive to Blowing Rock, shopping and ski slopes; a 10 minute walk to the Yadkin River for fishing or kayaking; 45 minute drive to Boone and Appalachian State University; the charm of Wilkesboro and Lenoir for antique shopping; wineries within an hours drive...lots to do. You may want to take the "roads less traveled" and explore the back hills and valleys of the area. You will be parking to the right of the house. Warning...if you left a large city with traffic congestion, you will experience something similar while driving in the mountains during the autumn. Here is the foothills, we don't suffer the traffic nightmare of those who want to see the colorful leaves (and we also have them down here). Our Tom Dooley and Appalachian Culture festival will be held at the village on Sept. 24th from 10 am-5:00 p.m. The hiking path on the road behind the house leads to the river. Follow the signs. Enjoy birdwatching and fishing in the Yadkin River. Fun for the children could include the "Go Find the Birds" game. Each cabin in the village has small plaques of handprinted birds of NC. Set a time limit and GO! Ski season is here and the slopes are not far away. By this spring, we hope to open the Carter children's nursery which has hand painted Disney characters painted on all of the walls by the late Edith Ferguson Carter back in the early 1950's! We will post photos as soon as the work is completed.
