HIstoric Epperly MIll is located 1 mile from the light in downtown Floyd, yet maintains the privacy and serenity of the mountains with Dodd Creek cooling the landscape. With its central location, historic architecture, locally sourced materials, and hand crafted accents, there is no place like it. We have enjoyed restoring this great piece of Floyd history and look forward to sharing it with you. Epperly Mill was built in 1901 by John Epperly, his sons and brothers. It has been a staple of Floyd Culture ever since. The pond that was created by the dam was once a swimming hole that gathered the town, providing ice blocks during the winter months. A working Mill until the mid 1940's, it was passed along to several families until the early 70's when it became the epicenter of the "counterculture movement" as more and more free thinkers moved to Floyd county escaping the traditional suburban lifestyle. As such, it was Floyd's first food co-operative and then coffee house. The Mill sat silently for several years until it became the home to Presidio Arts run by Charlie Coleman. In 2016, a fire and flood threatened to end the Mill's illustrious career. The brave men and women of the Floyd Fire Department went into the flood waters with ladder and chainsaw, (and lack of pants) to put the fire out. Remnants of the fire can be seen in the venue hall on the first floor. That's when we stepped in. With nothing but love and time and the skills of Bill Eberhardt and Floydian professionals, the mill was structurally stabilized, re wired, re plumbed, insulated, sanded and oiled, massaged and shined. Her old shell was given a lift and all other parts were hand created from materials found as close as we could to the mill itself, if not Floyd. Three years we have put into loving her, we think you will notice. The yard and the creek are also included in the stay. Feel free to enjoy the creek, but do bring river shoes. There is also a place to have a small fire for evening relaxation. The mill is set up so you can be self sufficient. Your privacy is kept with combination locks to get into the front door, and a separate combination lock for your apartment. This will allow you to check in when you arrive without the hassle of needing someone present. We do live close by, but, I work full time and Adam works out of town much of the time. That being said, anything you need I will get to you as quickly as possible. If you are staying for a while and would like cleaning service, we have people I can contact for you, which you can deal with directly. We are located 1 mile from the light in Floyd. So you are right next to Friday Night Jamboree, The Art Market, And the farmers market. There are incredible hikes surrounding the area. The homes across the street are both older than the mill. The neighbors are all wonderful people and we are lucky to have them. Verizon is the only cell service available in the area. We will have recommendations on hikes, water activities, wineries, and events in the area. This is an Old Mill. The windows and stairs are original. This makes staying very difficult for those with limited mobility. If you have a hard time on regular stairs, this is not the place for you. If you have difficulty with stability and need even ground, somewhere else is more suited to you. If you have young children, or wild older children, there are better choices for you as well.
