Cozy 1790 Hudson Valley Farmhouse near Skiing
Our Upstate NY home is a cozy country cottage that dates from the 1790s in beautiful Columbia County. On 14 acres, it's private and quiet, with woodland walks, a secluded in-ground swimming pool, a lush garden, and lots of country walks, towns, drives, culture, and outdoor activities nearby. The House: This is a beautiful and well-maintained 1790s farmhouse in scenic Columbia County, between the Hudson River and the Berkshires. The house is cozy and yet spacious: 3 bedrooms (one with a queen bed and a twin daybed, one with a queen sleeper sofa, and one with a full bed), 2 bathrooms, a working fireplace, piano, laundry, a dining room, living room, a renovated kitchen with lots of light, and a screened-in porch with a dutch door. Two of the bedrooms have writing desks, and one of the bedrooms has an additional daybed for a nap or small sleeper. The aesthetic is rustic and refined, with a few modern touches. All the rooms are light-filled, and two of the bedrooms have windows on three sides. Outside, there is a detached deck, beautifully landscaped gardens, an original 1790s post-and-beam barn, and two wide lawns ringed in by trees, one of which features an in-ground, gunite swimming pool with a retractable cover. The yard is gorgeous in all seasons. The house is on a quiet country road, and the property consists of 14 acres of forest. It's a quiet, private setting: you cannot see other houses from the property. You'll have access to the whole house and property. I'm available by phone, text, or email anytime. The house lies in the midst of beautiful Columbia County farmland. You'll find other old farmhouses tucked away on country roads, which are great for walking or biking. We love our local farm stands and country stores, which you'll find in the guidebook. Skiing Nearby: The house is 30 minutes away from great skiing at Catamount ((website hidden)) and Jiminy Peak (website hidden)) and Bousquet ((website hidden)), and it's 40 minutes to cross-country skiing at Pine Ridge. Other Nearby Highlights: The township is Malden Bridge, with the nearest towns being Old Chatham and Chatham, where you'll find country stores, orchards and farmer's markets, an independent movie theater, antique shops, wine shops, breweries, bakeries, restaurants, and more. We're 35 minutes from Hudson, 25 minutes from Albany, and 45 minutes from the best of the Berkshires, including Tanglewood and Jacob's Pillow, and skiing is about the same distance away. Closer to the house, there are rolling fields, farmlands and forests, perfect for short or long walks. The area is full of beautiful farmhouses and an important Shaker settlement. It's a 2.5 hour drive from New York City, most of which is on the scenic Taconic parkway, and 2 hours west of Boston on I-90. The closest transportation hubs are Hudson, where the Amtrak train stops, and Albany, for Amtrak and the Greyhound Bus. You can rent a car in either town, which is much cheaper than renting in New York City. We recommend Enterprise, who can pick you up from the station on request. Once at the house, the nearest stores and amenities are at least a few miles away, so it's best to have a car. The country roads are also great for biking and horse riding. Upstate New York can experience the extremes of seasonal weather. Please double check the forecast before your stay and pack accordingly.
