The Hotel Leger was first established in 1851 and is still one of the longest continually operating hotels in California. The town and hotel were once the busiest in the Mother Lode, attracting miners and business people from around the world. We invite you to come visit and experience the rich history for yourself. Escape to a less complicated time for a few days of quiet relaxation and fun as we take you back to the 1800's. Ray Garamendi, descended from Basque hotel owners in Ogden, Utah, met Mary Jane McSorley at the University of Nevada in Reno. They returned to her family ranch in Mokelumne Hill where they raised their seven children. This room features a queen sized bed, sitting area, fireplace, en-suite bathroom and balcony access. This room in NOT dog friendly. We encourage our guests to explore the property and absorb the historic vibe. In addition to our beautiful courtyard and welcoming lobby, guests are welcome to check out the old county jail space and investigate the hotel cellars. Our restaurant and saloon are open for dinner every day but Tuesday, open for lunch Thursday-Sunday and we serve breakfast on Sunday! (Complimentary continental breakfast provided Monday -Saturday) There is someone on the property to assist you every day from 7:30 a.m. until at least 10 p.m. except Tuesday when the office closes at 3:30. We are always available by phone overnight if you need assistance. Historic Main Street is home to a variety of interesting businesses and three historic cemeteries are within walking distance. The surrounding region is chock full of things to do and see year round. Our central location provides easy access to all that the area has to offer, including the wine regions of both Calaveras and Amador counties. The beautiful Mokelumne River and the four nearby reservoirs abound with activities for water enthusiasts. Big Trees State Park, caverns, gold mine tours, antiquing, concerts, hiking, Indian Grinding Rock and the annual frog jumping county fair made famous by Mark Twain are just a sampling of what the area has to offer. We are easily accessible by car from the Bay Area and the Central Valley. The nearest airport is approximately one hour away (Sacramento). In keeping with the Old West flavor of our hotel, there are no phone or TVs in guest rooms. Complimentary Wi-fi is available.
