Located ~2.5 miles from Penland School of Crafts, this 1100 sqft cozy cottage rests in a quiet valley on pasture land, surrounded by huge trees and bordering a 20 ft-wide rushing creek. We offer 18% off weekly stays and 30% off monthly stays. It is built in the pricing on the website. Walk to John Britt's and Shawn Ireland's Galleries and pottery making labs. Centrally located between Mt. Mitchell (tallest east of the Mississippi), Roan Mountain, and Grandfather Mountain. The Blue Ridge Parkway is approximately 8.6 miles from the house. Enjoy the Gem and Rock Museum before entering the Parkway. Go either direction on the Parkway to visit either Crabtree Falls or Linville Falls. Although you will be in a very serene and secluded area, you are very close to grocery stores, restaurants, antique shops, galleries, and attractions. The space Penland Cabin is approximately 1100 sq ft, with vaulted ceilings in the Living Room and Dining/Sun room. The Living Room includes a comfy seating area in front of wood burning fireplace and another sitting area across the room facing a 46 inch HDTV. Bring your own gaming system and HDMI cord for connection and steaming via the TV. Enjoy your nights in the cozy Living Room relaxing by the fire, playing games, reading books, accessing the internet, or watching the HDTV with full cable access. This charming cottage-style home offers a full size refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishwasher, along with fully stocked kitchen implements, including plates, glasses, cups and tableware/cookware. Coffee/tea and water are provided. Please bring your own food, spices, and condiments with you. We appreciate you leaving things cleaned and all dishes put away before you check out. The Dining/Sun Room includes washer/dryer, dining area surrounded by huge windows letting in an enormous amount of natural light, and a full sized futon for extra guests to sleep on as needed. A deck off the back of the Dining/Sun Room offers another path to the 1.5 Acre lot. The first of two bedrooms is furnished with a comfortable full bed, a cedar wardrobe, side table and a small vanity. The second bedroom includes two equally comfortable twin beds, a cedar wardrobe and side tables. Clean linens are provided on the beds and extra sheets for the futon are provided. Please leave the linen on your bed at checkout - housekeeping will launder all linens following your stay. An added amenity is a writing/office nook complete with charming desk and lamp for your computer, handwritten note-taking, or postcard writing . You will also find an array of pamphlets describing attractions in the area. Things to note - This house is NOT wheel-chair accessible. Guests must walk up approximately 5 front porch steps to enter front door. There are approximately 3 steps up side deck to sun room entrance. - Towels, washclothes, bed linen, and dish towels are provided. A starter supply of body wash, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, paper towels, and dish soap/detergent are provided. - CABLE television and WiFi are provided. - Smoking: Penland Cabin is a smoke free environment. Smoking is allowed outside only. Please extinguish cigarette butts in porch ashtrays and dispose of safely. - Pets: Sorry, but no pets allowed in the house. This is for the comfort of guests with allergies. - PHONE: Cell phone coverage depends largely on the service provider. However, most smart phones can use WiFi to place a call. There is no land line phone service. - HEAT: Central heat. -Air Conditioning: Open screened windows and the ceiling fans along with cool mountain breezes keep the summer indoor temperatures fairly comfortable. However, for those warm days, window a/c units are available in the living room and in the sun/dining room. - No parties or events to be held at Penland Cabin or it's property. - The house is approximately 4 minutes from a gas station and 7 min to Ingles Grocery store in Spruce Pine. There is also a Walmart on Spruce Pine and local Farmer's Markets on scheduled days. The neighborhood This home is located in Bakersville, North Carolina, United States. We are only about 4 miles from Historic Downtown Spruce Pine where you'll find antique stores, art and craft stores, restaurants, grocery store, and a local brewery and pizza shop. For any unforeseen emergencies, Blue Ridge Mission Regional Hospital is also in Spruce Pine. Nearby attractions also include tubing/rafting, zip-lines, gem mining, golf, and horseback riding. Additionally, Penland Cabin is within a short walking distant to two renowned artists homes and galleries (John Britt and Shawn Ireland). We are centrally located between Mt. Mitchell (tallest mountain east of the Mississippi), Roan Mountain (world's largest natural rhododendron garden), and Grandfather Mountain (mile high swinging bridge and wildlife preserve). The Blue Ridge Parkway is approximately 8.6 miles driving through Spruce Pine. You will want to explore the Gem and Rock Museum (very kid friendly!) before entering the Parkway. Go either direction on the Parkway to visit either Crabtree Falls or Linville Falls. Also try to visit the newly opened Bare Dark Sky Observatory off Hwy 80 North at the old Energy Xchange site. Of course, visiting eclectic Asheville and America’s largest private home, the Biltmore Estate, is a must and well worth the hour drive. Burnsville, approximately 20 miles southwest is another quaint town with lots of shops, restaurants, old fashioned ice-cream shop, old time movie theater, antique shops galore, a town square used for musical, crafts, arts, historical re-enactments AND the annual Old Timey Days (last weekend in September) is headed up with a parade of antique tractors and cars followed by bluegrass music, dancing, etc. You will want to also try to catch live theatre at the historic Parkway Playhouse near downtown Burnsville. Local restaurants and breweries also offer live music. Mayland Community College’s Bare Dark Sky Observatory offers tours to see the observatory and telescopes. Astronomy videos are available for viewing, as well as tours of the Earth to Sky Park. For upcoming events visit, visit their web site. Getting around - A car is essential to getting around. The closest airport is in Asheville, one hour + away. There is also Johnson City Airport, TN that is over an hour away. Boone is one hour away. Charlotte is 2 1/2 hours away. There is no public transportation, taxi, or Uber in our immediate area. - This house is NOT wheel-chair accessible. The bathroom is not handicapped accessible. Guests must walk up steps to get to inside of house.
