Welcome to the Old Mill Manor one of the oldest homes in Ontario with spectacular grounds & close to Ottawa. The front patio faces the river & seats 12 (6 at patio table & 6 in Adirondack chairs). Relax in the salt water gas heated pool. Watch the sunset over at the fire pit. We supply the fire wood & fire starter. Kayak, canoe & fish off the docks on the river. Play badminton & croquette. Full time gardener maintains the grounds & gardens. Walk to the Mississippi Golf Club, restaurant & bar or the Aveda Spa. Located in Almonte, a movie shot location for Hallmark. See our Facebook page for a behind the scenes look at Hallmark's "Scavenger Hunt" where they identify all the local film shoots. The Old Mill Manor has a family friendly layout with 5 bedrooms plus a bonus kid’s play room. The main floor is a family area with 4 separate rooms: formal dining room seats 11, living room with a gas fireplace, half bathroom & an eat in kitchen. The second & 3rd floors are all bedrooms & 3 full bathrooms. We believe that a good night's sleep is essential so all our bedrooms have blackout drapes, comfortable beds & cotton sheets along with closets for suitcases, writing desks, dressers & mirrors. All bedrooms are located on the 2nd & 3rd floors which allows those who are tired to go to bed while others can stay up & socialize on the main floor. The 3rd floor is a quieter retreat floor with a large double "parents" room featuring a king size bed and a trundle day bed. There is a bonus children's room on this floor as well & a Queen size bedroom. In total, there are 3 king beds, 1 queen bed, 4 twin beds & a trundle.f We're located in the quiet village of Appleton, just a short 35 minute car ride from the Nation's Capital, downtown Ottawa. We're an 8 minute drive from Almonte & Carleton Place where you will find everything you need like liquor, beer & grocery stores, breweries, bike trails, great restaurants, coffee shops, museums & hospitals. Don't forget to book a day trip to Almonte (8 minutes away). Almonte is voted one of the top 10 towns in Canada by TripAdvisor. Hallmark films movies here & it's home to the #1 chocolate makers in the world, Hummingbird Chocolate. My personal favorite is HFT Donuts. You will not be able to resist the Killaloe Sunrise lemon filled donut. $2.25 for a great cup of coffee & a donut. You don't have to leave the house to have a good time. Stay onsite & enjoy kayaking, canoeing & fishing. If you need a lesson, Gary will help you catch & release your first fish. Or borrow our clubs & Walk to the Mississippi Golf Club. Enjoy biking or hiking? We're on the Rotary Centennial Bike & Hike Trail that connects us to Carleton Place & Almonte on the former CP Railway tracks. The History of The Old Mill Manor This home was built in 1842 by the Teskey Family who immigrated from Ireland & settled along the banks of the Mississippi River In the 1800s. They were entrepreneurs who built a town starting with a Saw Mill then a Gris Mill (for processing flour), but it was their Woolen Mill (the ruins of which can still been seen today) that created the town of Teskeyville (now The Village of Appleton) and continued in operation for the next 100 years. Teskeyville was bustling village with 2 general stores, a blacksmith shop, several mills & lots of houses along the Mississippi River. By 1842, the Teskey family built this stately limestone manor (1 of 3 homes in the neighbourhood) with 4 fireplaces & no indoor plumbing a full 75 years before electricity revolutionized households. In the 1900s, 3 spinster teachers “would rough it in the backwoods of Teskeyville every summer without indoor plumbing and electricity.” Fast forward 175 years, add indoor plumbing, heat and electricity & no one roughs it here anymore. Today, Teskeyville is now the Village of Appleton and this 1842 limestone manor is now “The Old Mill Manor”, a five bedroom plus kids room vacation rental with catered High Tea lunches & Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners. Since 2015, we’ve hosted over 4000 guests from Dubai, Germany, France, Japan, the U.S. and all over Canada. Some of our guests have now returned for a 4th time. We are the place where families meet up because they're coming from Toronto, Montreal & Ottawa. Some of our guests fly in from Calgary & BC to attend weddings. Every check in gives us the opportunity to give our guests a home away from home where they can unwind & catch up with friends & family. We take family photos of our guests & post them on Instagram & Our Facebook page. Many guests follow us on Social Media in anticipation of their visit because it is very easy for us to take beautiful photos here of the sunset, the water, the house, the pool, the gardens etc. We also have a virtual walk through tour as one of our links so you & your party can view the house & the floorplans online & choose the right room for you. THE MANOR STAFF are SUPER HOSTS 1) Gary is the onsite gardener & building maintenance man. He's in charge of the pool, hot tub, fire pit, BBQ & internet. In his spare time, Gary can teach you how to cast a line to catch more fish or kayak. Gary spent the last 30 years managing restaurants & hotels. 2) Julie will book your stay & suggest fun in town activities like tours, restaurants & catering. 3) Dania is our excellent cleaner with & a good eye for detail. 4) LG the talkative tabby cat is our "Guest Greeter". She loves people & children & roaming the gardens. If you're allergic to cats, don't worry she does not enter the vacation rental side of the home. 5) Carleton Place Dry Cleaners handles all laundry. GUEST COMMENTS A BIRDER"S PARADISE, Flo & Gary Hayes (2014) The picturesque village of Appleton overlooking the pretty little Mississippi River was an amazing change of scenery and lifestyle, but I was also surprised and overjoyed at the variety of birds. Even without feeders, which we eventually put up, we were visited by longtime favourites: cardinals, chickadees, blue jays, juncos and redpolls (winter), house finches, mourning doves, hairy and downy woodpeckers, crows and ravens, but not so many blackbirds and no pigeons or house sparrows! We were happy to observe less frequent city residents such as Orioles, warblers, wrens, purple finches, nuthatches, flycatchers, a great variety of the smaller sparrows (white throated, white crowned, song, chipping and on), pine siskins, catbirds, flickers, pileated woodpeckers, and so many hummingbirds. Occasionally a wild turkey or two would wander close. And over two winters there were snowy owls in the area. We had occasional visits from birds, some of which I had never seen before: indigo buntings, rose breasted grosbeaks, Carolina wrens (whose beautiful song I taped). With the river in front and a bay along the side, I took interest in water birds. Kingfishers, osprey and great blue herons found good fishing, and for a few weeks we had a large flock of the smaller green herons. There were the usual mallards, Canada geese, seagulls, but ducks I had never seen before, including golden eye and the beautiful wood ducks (some nesting in trees along the lane). We're delighted by occasional loons and heard their haunting cry, especially in the night, along with unseen owls and night herons.
