The town of New Market has been relatively unspoiled by the passage of time. Remaining much as it was in its beginning, a small drover's town built to service the travelers and wagoners going to and from the Baltimore markets by stage coach. It is in appearance the quintessence of the circa 1800 small town in western Central Maryland. It is well-preserved and shows more original fabric and a more representative development from the Federal into the Greek Revival and Victorian periods than the other towns in the area. Its Federal style buildings are well-executed, showing the high level of craftsmanship attainable at the time. The gray federal style building bears a Frederick County Landmarks Foundation plate numbered 011, is located in the New Market historic district and was entered in the National Register on December 6th 1975. In front of the main building is a small brick platform with a stone slab. This was used to assist people to mount their horses, and to enter and leave the stage coaches that traveled the Old National Pike. The building was formerly known as the National Hotel and Stage Office. The original hotel sign dated 1840 has been preserved and is currently displayed on the lower level. The rear courtyard contains bricks from a grist mill that once stood in Monrovia, a neighboring village. The centerpiece of the courtyard is an actual grinding stone taken from the same mill. The smoke house is located just off the courtyard, and it is believed to be as old as the original part of the main building, dated 1840. The main building was constructed in four stages. The old kitchen with the large fire place in the rear first floor, the adjacent room and the two rooms above them are the oldest part of the building, and are believed to have been built about 1798, which would have been five years after the town of New Market was laid out for subdivision in 1793. The other two additions were added in the early 1800's in front of, and to the east of the original building. In the late 1800's when the building operated as a hotel and stage office, it also featured a whiskey room containing a secret staircase and trap door where the whiskey was transported and stored. The second level featured a grand ballroom where town members and hotel guests would assemble for dancing and social events. Full access to upper level bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living room, and cozy private balcony. Full availability The town of New Market has been relatively unspoiled by the passage of time, remaining much as it was in its beginning, a small drovers town built to service travelers going to and from Baltimore East walk to local shops and restaurants. There are two additional buildings behind the main house. One is currently operating as Stageline Coffee Roasters, small batch coffee hand crafted on site. The aroma of fresh roasted coffee often fills the air as roaster Clayton is busy roasting coffee. Most weekends he can be found roasting and perfecting new coffee styles that draws locals to come and sample his latest creations on the quaint patio. The adjacent building will eventually facilitate the expansion of Stageline Coffee Roasters. The lower level of the main building is home to 5 West Cafe. Open Tuesday - Saturday 7am-3pm. Serving small batch hand roasted coffee and fresh locally sourced pastries.
