If your goal is a quiet, comfortable place to stay in Iowa City, join us in our charming home in the historic Northside neighborhood. We're 6 walkable blocks to downtown, 5 to Northside Market, a short walk to Hancher Auditorium/City Park, and 3 to the Iowa Writer's Workshop. We love to get to know any guests who want to get to know us, but we won't bother anyone who wants to be left alone. It's your call. No pets, drugs, smoking, or heavy drinking allowed. No perfumes, please, due to allergies. This bedroom (2nd floor) is 225 sq ft (15' x15'). It has a four-poster bed, antique dresser, small writing desk and chair, bedside table, overhead lighting and fan, 2 lamps, a desk lamp, bookcase, and closet. The bathroom (glass shower stall, vessel sink, antique cabinet) is directly across the hall and contains a wide variety of amenities, including blow dryer, salon-quality hair products, eye makeup remover, and more. Most of our 5600 sq ft home is shared space; we'll point out the few exceptions. You'll have access to the first-floor living room and dining room, the second-floor living room, parts of the basement, and all of the decks and front porch. Coffee and tea are available for you to make at any time. Feel free to store food and beverages in the refrigerator and make your own meals using our cookware and dishes. You'll have access to WIFI throughout the house. Staying awhile? Feel free to use the washer and drier. Stairs are required to enter the house and to access the guest rooms. A few times per year, we host readings, house concerts by friends, or parties. Feel free to join us if you like! If that's not something that interests you or would be annoying to you, be sure to tell us before you book. We have up-to-date smoke alarms and heat sensors, C02 sensors, and fire extinguishers throughout the house, and we'll make sure you are aware of the many exits available to you. We take everyone's safety very seriously. We've been told our home feels like home to our guests too. That's exactly how we'd like you to feel when you stay with us. If there's anything we can do to make your stay better, please let us know. If you need something and don't see it, just ask; we can probably provide it. We have blow-up beds and couches for extra guests or kids and may even have a spare bed available. If you'd like a humidifier or extra heater, more blankets or pillows, or any amenities, just ask! We'll do our best to accommodate your requests. We can't wait to meet you! You'll have access to some of the basement, two living rooms, 2 eating areas, kitchen privileges, and all porches and decks. Make yourselves at home! You'll also have access to our wifi service. We hate to have to bring this up, but please be aware that any downloading of copyrighted material is illegal and will be prosecuted by the authorities. Our internet company charges a $250,000 fine for downloading illegal material, and it is also a federal crime. If your illegal behavior causes us legal expenses, you will also be responsible for those. So thanks in advance for being respectful of the law and the wifi we provide! We work out of our home, but we won't be in your way. Our offices are on the top floor, as are our sleeping quarters; your room is on the second floor. We're pretty busy people with work and other commitments, but when we are available, we'll be happy to get to know you if you like. We love meeting new people but we won't spoil your trip by monopolizing your time. :) We love being in this historic neighborhood, where trees create a canopy over some of the streets. Old brick streets in this area give a feel for the early days of the city. We're a short walk to City Park, where you can swim in the city pool, picnic, run, do yoga, roller blade, watch kids play baseball, or stroll along the riverbank. We're near a skateboard park if that's your jive. We're also near Hancher Auditorium, the beautiful theatre the University built after the devastating flood of 2008. In addition, we're near the Theatre Department, with small theatres hosting student plays. It's delightful to stroll, bike, or skate along the University's section of riverbank, hang out on one of the footbridges, or relax on a bench and watch the water and people flow by. A walk downtown is pleasant. You'll pass the famed Hamburg Inn, where presidents and other politicians have visited with the locals... Iowa City is very walkable and getting more and more bike friendly. We live near enough to downtown and the University that you can easily choose to walk or bike there. Both the city bus and the free Cambus stop are just 3 blocks from our house. If you like to bike, skate, or walk, City Park is a short walk away. There are biking/walking paths near our home that lead up to and beyond North Liberty. You'll have no trouble finding interesting places to ride/walk within the city as well. We will be happy to tell you about points of interest that you can see along the way. We're also a short drive from the Reservoir and Lake Macbride (boating, canoeing, swimming, and fishing). There are several nice parks with hiking and walking paths a short drive away. Many bike enthusiasts ride the country roads that exit the city. Interested in something we haven't mentioned? We'll be glad to help you find it if it exists in this area. Park on the street or behind our house in our driveway area off the alley. Please don't park in the neighbors' spaces, as that's considered rude in our neighborhood. (It also might get your car towed.) Questions about anything at all? Just ask! We're doing some redecorating on the first floor, but that shouldn't impact your stay; your room is on the second floor, and there is plenty of shared space to enjoy in other parts of the house. If we need to make noise, we'll do it when you are not around. We charge a $15 cash fee per lost key. So hang onto them, please!
