We're beach-lovers who longed for the hills, so we traded our condo at the coast for a cabin on the mountain! The Lost Pelican is the perfect place to unwind in the Buck Mountain community. Enjoy our peaceful escape as you take in the view from our screen porch, roast s’mores by the firepit, spin some vinyl, break out the board games and dine on our front porch. Hike to the fishing pond where you can find miles of trails and waterfalls. (Booking guests must be at least 25 years old.) Our two-level cabin sleeps up to 5 with 2 downstairs bedrooms (via SPIRAL STAIRCASE) with queen beds & a sleeper couch upstairs. From relaxing by our gas-log fireplace to a lively game of ping pong in our detached Wildcat Saloon, we've got you covered! We also offer corn hole, foosball, giant Jenga, board games, a wicked Stephen King collection, and a random selection of vinyl to suit whatever mood you’re in. Bring your fishing pole to try your luck at the community catch-and-release pond, or spend hours hiking the trails to Staghorn Falls, Serpentine Falls, the Oasis, Fern Flats and other little hideaways (all with hammocks and Adirondack chairs to relax in along the way). If you can manage to pull yourselves away from Buck Mountain, we’re a 30 min-1 hour drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, local vineyards, Boone, West Jefferson, Todd, Blowing Rock, and Kerr Scott Lake. You will have full access to the house and games in the “Wildcat Saloon” (please do not disturb the garage beyond the tapestries where we store our personal items.) Buck Mountain's amazing amenities include a stocked catch-and-release pond with gazebos and picnic tables, a 70-foot waterfall with hiking trails, and 32 miles of hiking/biking trails. (Sorry, ATVs are not permitted for guest use.) 🌠 Our cabin is perfect for star-gazers 🌝🛸 🚗 9 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway 🏍 🚵‍♀️ 30 minutes from the epic Kerr Scott mountain bike trails with 20+ miles of highly rated, flowy fun or the family-friendly Cub Creek trails in Wilkesboro. In the summer, Sugar and Beech ski resorts transform into bike parks! ⛰ 🚴‍♀️ Road biking, too! Yes, in the mountains! We're about 30 minutes from the only 10-mile stretch of flat road in Ashe County along the GORGEOUS Railroad Grade Road from Fleetwood to Todd. 🚴 🍄 A mushroom foragers' paradise (we even have a contact for a guided shroom tour)! ❄ ☃ Within an hour to Sugar or Appalachian Ski Mountain with skiing ⛷ boarding 🏂 ice skating ⛸ and tubing action 🛷 🚣‍♀️ About 30 minutes from Kerr Scott Lake, the New River or the Yadkin River -- pick your spot for tubing 🛶 paddling 🏊‍♀️ swimming ⛵️ boating or 🎣 fishing (plus, we have a catch-and-release pond within a short hike of our cabin🐟) 🌄 Ahh-mazing, unforgettable sunrises and sunsets 🌅 Ommmmmmmmm 🧘🧘‍♂️ 🐼 Music festivals! Concerts! From Merlefest to summer festivals on Sugar, music everywhere 🍺 Breweries 🍇 Wineries 🍎 Cideries 🥃 Distilleries Directions: From Raleigh / Greensboro/ Charlotte: * From Raleigh/Greensboro: Follow 40W to 421N exit 188 * From Charlotte: Follow 77N to 421N * We are 15.3 miles from the rest stop on 421N * Watch for the Benny Parson Hwy sign on 421 and the next road on your right is Pumpkin Run * Turn right on Pumpkin Run and drive 1.3 miles to turn right up Buck Mountain Road - look for the sign * Enter the code (changes monthly) * Continue on Buck Mountain Road, staying left on Staghorn Road at split at Doe Run * Drive 1.5 miles and bear left to stay on Staghorn * Watch for the Dangerous Intersection sign and mirror where you will bear left onto Deer Run (gravel road) * Continue about a mile on Deer Run past the Outdoor Activity Center (OAC: This is the meeting place in case of fire) and turn left on Wolf Pen Road * Our cabin is on the right toward the end of Wolf Pen Road: Look for the 564 address sign at the second entrance. * Please park in front of the house and do not use driveway on the side of/behind the cabin * Due to Covid, we are asking guests bring own queen sheets, towels and linens. We do have linens on-site that guests are welcome to use, as long as guests launder in hot water, fold and return to linen closet in bathroom. Please let us know in advance if you prefer this option. * We suggest arriving and departing in daylight to better navigate the switchbacks on the 3.75-mile drive up the mountain (the last mile is on a gravel road). * Take a screen shot of directions before you arrive at the gate as there's no service coming up the mountain. * Please use the second entrance where the address sign is located. * You must take your trash and recyclables to the Buck Mountain Recycling Center on your way out.
