Charming Lakefront Cottage on Big Alum Lake
This rustic lakefront cottage has beautiful views of the Big Alum Lake, a full kitchen, comfy living room, and plenty of space for the whole family. Make summer memories that will last a lifetime in our family's lake house. Big Alum Lake is spring-fed and offers great swimming, boating, and fishing (URL HIDDEN) it's just ten minutes to historic OSV (Old Sturbridge Village), great dining, antique and quaint New England shops, and all necessities. We use an updated certified cleaning company. This is an older cottage which our family has loved for years. You will experience a rustic, lakefront camp experience, not that of a hotel or resort. The cottage sleeps up to six. One bedroom features one queen and one full size bed. The second bedroom has two twin beds and one camp size bunk bed. The house has a bathroom with a stand-up shower. A galley kitchen features a sink, stove and oven, a microwave, and a full refrigerator. The kitchen leads into a dining area and living room with a comfortable seating and picturesque views of the tranquil Big Alum lake. There is a land line telephone, cable TV, and WiFi, all provided by Spectrum. There is no air conditioning. But there are fans and lots of windows and the cottage is usually cool and comfortable. There is no heat of any kind in the cottage. It can be rented into the fall, but understand that the nights will be chilly and blankets will be needed. If you are the camping type, fall nights in this cottage are great! Outside, a dock and lake-front yard provide a great place to lounge in the sun or shade, and steps into the lake allow guests to wade or swim in shallow water by the shore, or easily go out deeper. Well behaved family dogs are welcome! Please take your trash with you at the end of the stay. Guests will have access to the whole house, and the front and back yards. Guests will also be able to access the lake for swimming. We also welcome you to bring your own kayaks or canoes to use in addition to the two adult and one junior size kayak offered. Please note that we do not have a boat launch, so while you could dock a fishing, pontoon or ski boat at our dock, you would need to use a public boat launch on the other side of the lake. Not typically on-site. The Big Alum Lake is a charming and quiet "great pond" with many families along its shores. During the day, you can expect some jet skis and motor boats, but for the most part, people on the lake use kayaks and canoes. You can expect boaters to greet you with a smile and wave as they go by, and neighbors welcome as much or as little interactions as you'd prefer. If you're lucky, you might even spot the the lake's sea plane as it takes off and lands on the water. There is a great orchard and brewery just a ten minute walk down the road. The facility has farm animals to visit and is home to the Hyland Orchard, Rapscallion Brewery and the Rapscallion Disc Golf Course. Please check them out on the web, they are wonderful and a popular destination! Parking is available behind the house. It can fit numerous cars. You can access the house via Lake Road, and there is no public transportation in the area. Lake Road is right off of Arnold Road which leads to the main road in Sturbridge (Route 20) that features shops, restaurants, galleries, and cafes. The world famous Old Sturbridge Village is in town too. -- The running water in the cottage is water from the spring-fed lake. Guests should bring their own bottled water for drinking and cooking. -- There is no heat in the cottage. On chilly nights, guests may need an extra blanket or two. And because there is no heat, the cottage is not available from October through April. -- All mattresses and pillows have hypoallergenic zippered covers. Guests need to bring their own bed linens (sheets, pillowcases - there are some blankets available) and towels. -- New flooring was installed in much of the cottage in June, 2020. Other small cosmetic updates were done at the same time. Future updates include replacing an older discolored wood panel and updating doors. --Please take your trash with you at the end of the stay.
