Amazing kayaking adventures in the endless nature preserves and sloughs and harbors of Moss Landing. The sea otters are very friendly and might even try to jump in the kayak with you! (Don't let them and don't feed them though, it's a no no) There are numerous whale watching, shark watching and fishing charter boats leaving multiple times daily across the street in the harbor (1 minute walk). Nature hikes and an awesome beach walk/bike trail along the picturesque slough and Salinas River State Beach. (we have old beach cruisers if you want to borrow while here) History of the house: This cottage has a history of it's own! Built back in 1910, this was the original bait shop back when Highway One ran where Moss Landing Road is today. It was converted into a surfboard maker's shop back in the 1950's and 1960's. In the 1970's it was an art gallery, then little antique store throughout the 1980's. It was the Moro Cojo Art gallery again in the 1990's. Lots of history in these old redwood walls! Disclaimer: House is tiny! Do not have expectations for a large space. The square footage is approx 200. There is an induction burner and microwave. No oven, and no toaster. The house is located right on Moss Landing road and has it's own parking space in front. There is a keypad entry, so no need to deal with owners about checking in or checking out. We bought this unique property recently because the location in unbeatable. We live in the main house which is in the back, the 2 houses are separated by a 8' tall redwood fence and you most likely will not see us, we always give our guests privacy. There is a private beach in front of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, 1 block away, where you can let your do run off leash plus an excellent 1 mile loop beach trail along the slough/beach dunes. Moss Landing is a quaint, historic, super sleepy place with an east coast, fishing village feel that you just don't see anywhere. It's like being transported through time into the early 1900's with the westerns facades on all the art galleries and restaurants. It's also home to 3 very famous, awesome restaurants, Phil's Fish Market, that is famous for it's cioppino and live music of bluegrass and rock from Monday’s through thursdays. They have a fun oyster bar too. Then we have the Whole Enchilada and the Haute Enchilada restaurants, 2 huge, beautiful restaurants with delicious food and cocktails. Our house is right across the bridge from them. No need to uber from too many margaritas! Moss Landing is also home to a real thriving fishing community and scientist community with the Cal State University Moss landing Marine Laboratories and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute just a 2 minute walk from the house. Everything is walking distance from the cottage. No need for cars and it's perfect for biking or walking your dog. Monterey Bay Aquarium is about a 20 minute drive. Big Sur is just a little farther, about 45 minutes to an hour straight south on highway one. Santa Cruz, Capitola and Aptos are just 15-25 minutes depending on traffic. The best weather here is in the fall and winter months, around September through April, when we get more sunny days and perfect temperatures not to mention perfect waves for surfing. The house is centrally located in the harbor, and right off of Highway One, and there is sometimes traffic sounds from our place, depending on time of day, so if you are sensitive to noise from cars, then it may not be the place for you. The house is double walled, meaning it actually has 2 exterior walls, so it's pretty quiet inside, but if you open up the door/window, you will hear sounds from the road during the day and always the sea lions barking at night and the distant fog horn and jingling of boat masts in the harbor. The KOA campground is right across the street. Only a block away to the gorgeous white sand beaches that stretch for miles. The property is on a marine sanctuary, and is overflowing with sea life, it's like living in a national geographic nature documentary with the sea otters playing in front, the great blue herons, egrets roosting in our trees and hundreds of other rare birds living on the water. The house dates back to 1910. We love the history of this very truly unique property.
