The Green Door - safe and calm with walkability
This charming guesthouse in Lake Forest is only steps away from beautiful Market Square — the historic retail center of the community. Inside it features loads of light, in-unit washer and dryer, a well-equipped kitchen and a professionally designed stylish and calming interior. Outside, it has a vintage (ie. older) porch/breezeway with classic outdoor games. Walk to two grocery stores, bars/restaurants and our historic train station that connects to Chicago and various corporate shuttles. Just off the driveway, you'll enter through the vintage covered breezeway where you'll find the warm and welcoming green door. As you enter, you'll have a space to pause, and drop your keys/phone/worries. To your right is a small dinette that seats two (or four in a squeeze). On your left is the updated vintage well-equipped galley kitchen featuring a washer and dryer. Other features include a full size refrigerator, gas stove and oven with a lighted vent hood, a 12-cup coffee maker, a small microwave, a toaster, gallery lighting and open shelving to help you finding essentials. Beyond the entry, the space opens up to the light-filled mid-century modern inspired living room which features a velvet sofa, a small laptop side table, an arc lamp, a large television and a wall of shaded windows. A small desk is available upon request. Off the living room is the bedroom where you'll find a classic oak queen bed that features a 10" memory foam mattress and hotel quality sheets and pillows. An entire wall of storage provides space for hanging or folded clothes and much more. Off the bedroom is the bathroom that has a large mirror, modern sink and a shower/bathtub, complete with all the towels you will need. The guesthouse is completely private from our house - there is no access between our house and the guesthouse. • Walk to downtown Lake Forest (restaurants, bars, grocery and more!) • Washer and dryer in the unit • Fast WIFI • Netflix included • Well equipped kitchen • 10" Memory foam queen bed • Completely private entrance • Stylish interior • Desk/work station (upon request) Guests enjoy their own private entrance and living area. This guesthouse shares one thick sound-proof wall with our house. There is NO door or other opening between — and it is completely separate/private. I enjoy meeting guests and answering any questions as well as sharing local information as needed. I'm also available (via call/text/msg or in person) to answer any questions during stay. Our Green Door is located in a quiet and safe neighborhood. Across the street is the Robert McClory Trail that connects to various other area trails. There is a commuter train that runs (mostly during rush hour) on tracks across the street. We usually take the trail south when we walk to Market Square (a 10-minute walk), but there is also a sidewalk in front that takes you there. Market Square has charming European architecture and is the heart of retail in east Lake Forest. A few retail highlights include William Sonoma, Kiddles Sports, Lullulemon, Gerhardt's European Deserts and, of course and Starbucks. There are also many restaurants/bars in the area and two grocery stores (we have a more complete local listing in the cottage). There is also a post office, bookstore and drug stores. A mile or so east is Forest Park, which features dramatic overlooks of Lake Michigan, a bluff walk and also a boardwalk through unique area woodlands. For a fee, non-residents can enjoy the popular and gorgeous beach area below. During the off-season, anyone can walk down to the beach. My wife and I regularly walk there, year round. It typically takes us 1.5 hours round trip walking. Two miles north of us is the charming historic community of Lake Bluff where you can find additional retail, restaurants and a brewery and in summer, a Friday morning farmers market. You can take the trail or drive. We offer two bicycles that guests can enjoy on the adjacent bike trail and network (note: I ask all bicycle users to sign a standard 'hold harmless' agreement before using a bicycle). Walking or bicycling to town takes 10 to 3 minutes respectively. The Metra Rail Lake Forest East Train Station (UPNorth) is 10 minutes walking. Nearby communities worth a visit include Lake Bluff (10 minute bike ride) for it's restaurants and a brewery as well as Highwood (25 minute bike ride) for award-winning restaurants, bars and a distillery. Historic Lake Forest offers many unique shops, cafes and walkable alleys. We have 2 parking spaces for guests should they need them. Two bicycles with locks are available seasonably. Check in with me in advance please. Please lock them whenever you park them. We require all riders to sign a standard 'hold harmless' agreement prior to utilizing the bicycles. A desk is available upon request. Most people simply work on the kitchen table or sofa. If you would like a work desk, just let us know. If you have a car, please park on the left side of our double-wide driveway. Be aware the 3-season porch/breezeway isn't designed to be water tight. the windows and screens are 'serviceable' . No smoking or drug use on the property (including medical marijuana). Television includes Netflix. No local or cable stations. You might hear the commuter train line that runs on the other side of the trail/street, mostly during commuting hours.
