This spacious one-bedroom is in a quiet residential neighborhood on Richmond's West Side, across from a wooded city park, playground and basketball court. It is 3 blocks from Earlham College, 2.5 miles from the Wayne County Fairgrounds, and 3.7 miles from Reid Hospital. It sleeps up to 4. We offer discounts for weekly and monthly stays, when booked in advance. For stays longer than 14 days, maximum occupancy is 3 (with up to 2 children ) and you must submit a reservation request. This “garden level,” non-smoking apartment has a large living room with fold-down full-size futon, a large bedroom with queen bed and a roomy desk, a full bathroom with a tub-shower unit, a vintage Dwyer All-in-One Kitchen with a small refrigerator, and an attached garage that has an electric door opener and full-size refrigerator for guests’ additional food items. Smoking is allowed outdoors, on the side patio or behind the house. OUTDOOR AREAS: Guests are welcome to enjoy the side patio, which has two small bistro tables, each with two chairs, and a gas grill. Guests with children also may enjoy going to the park across the street or, during the summer, to the city swimming pool six blocks away — just ask to use our beach towels! The park is also a great place to walk your dog (the city does require you to pick up your pet’s solid waste). LAUNDRY: The shared laundry room with washer and dryer is available to all guests from 9 am to 9 pm, but requires a key. If you are staying with us 14 days or more, we will automatically give you a key. Otherwise, just ask and we will check one out to you. SHARED SPACES: The laundry room and side patio are the only shared spaces in the building where this apartment is located. We live in an adjacent home and always enjoy meeting our guests — but we also understand that guests usually prefer their privacy in this time of COVID-19. We’re always available, however, whether you want restaurant recommendations, you want to use of one of the guest house crock pots or other optional items, or you need us to address any concerns or problems. In any in-person interactions with our guests, we wear cloth masks, practice social distancing and use hand sanitizer. When you stay with us, you are 4-1/2 blocks from Needler’s Fresh Market, a full-service grocery store; Speedway gas station, which also has a Speedy Cafe; and Domino’s Pizza, which offers limited table service in addition to delivery. Also within walking distance on National Road West are some fast food/fast casual restaurants (Mancino’s and Arby’s). About 5-1/2 blocks away on West Main Street, you will find a Pizza King, a popular local pizza chain restaurant where you use a table-side phone to call in your order for the chain’s distinctive square-sliced pizzas (people around here go nuts over the Royal Feast). A bit further away to the East, but still walkable, are the Old Richmond Inn, the downtown area, and the trendy Depot District, which has numerous eateries (The Cordial Cork, Firehouse BBQ and Blues, Little Sheba’s, Roscoe’s, Ullery’s Ice Cream Parlor and more). Also in the Depot District are the Model T Museum, a quirky locally owned — and HUGE! — furniture store, as well as numerous other unique shops and businesses. To the west on National Road, also within walking distance, you will find a classic Dairy Queen, Subway, Great Wall Chinese restaurant and buffet, Burger King, CVS Pharmacy, and a small shopping mall with a dollar store, auto parts store and other shops. Also to the west on National Road, a short drive but probably a little far for most people to walk, is El Rodeo, a popular, locally owned Mexican restaurant. To the north on NW Fifth, you will find Clara’s Pizza King (part of the same chain as the Pizza King mentioned earlier, only this one has a double-decker bus inside that has been fitted with dining tables) and Bismarck Donuts. AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION: We recommend you call Susie’s Shuttle Service at (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) Airport transportation is also provided by area taxicab companies. AROUND TOWN: Rose View Transit buses stop at several locations within a block of this location. As of June (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , the regular bus fare was $1.75 and the rate for students, seniors and people with disabilities was $1.50. Other public transportation options include local cab companies, Uber and Lyft. Richmond also has dedicated bike lanes throughout the downtown area, as well as the Cardinal Greenway, a rails-to-trails conversion. We ask that guests in this apartment wash their dishes under running water, rather than filling the sink, and leave in place the special stopper that prevents food waste from going down the drain. These two preventative measures on your part, along with routine maintenance on our part, keep the “vintage” kitchen plumbing in good working order. In addition, we ask that guests avoid putting anything down the toilet other than whatever comes out of them and toilet paper. No feminine products. No “flushable” wipes. Because this an older home, the insides of the pipes have mineral deposits on which things other than toilet paper and waste can snag, creating blockages that cause messy, smelly backups (bad for you) and costly plumbing bills (bad for us). We normally allow guests to “instant book” stays of 2 to 14 nights. We also allow longer stays (up to 90 nights), subject to our approval. Just message us with a request, even if it isn’t for exactly the days you want, to check availability for extended stays. We can sometimes move shorter reservations to other apartments to clear this one for longer stays. Since this is a “garden level”/basement apartment, we have taken several steps to protect against problems that can occur in such spaces. The separate thermostat allows you to regulate the temperature, and it allows us to turn on the heat in the summer if the cooled air that settles from the apartment above makes this place chilly. In addition, this apartment is equipped with a low-noise dehumidifier that runs 24/7 and a water leak/humidity detector in the utility room where the furnaces, water heaters and floor drain are located. We remotely monitor temperature and humidity to keep this apartment free of moisture-related issues such as mold and mildew. We maintain the temperature between 66 and 74 degrees in this apartment year-round, and require that guests leave the HVAC system on at all times — again, to ensure that the environment remains healthy.
