This private home has just 4 lovely spacious guest bedrooms - 2 on the ground level and 2 on the upper level. The Upendo bedroom is on the ground level - king-size (6') bed - en-suite wet room, A/C, fan & private terrace seating. It's set back c.150 m from the gorgeous ocean, beautiful beach & local beach bars/restaurants, dive centres & all amenities. All rooms are beautifully set within a high walled garden & courtyard for privacy. Complimentary breakfast served in local beach bar ‘Nungwi Retreat’ offering bed and complimentary breakfast, is located on the northern tip of the Island, close to both Mnemba & Timbatu Islands’ beautiful coral reefs, for the most amazing diving/snorkelling on the island. As well as an idyllic sun, sand & ocean activities location, Nungwi is also a fabulous place to relax for pre/post safaris on the mainland of Tanzania, where the stunning Serengeti & Ngorongoro crater are simply magnificent. It is set-back just moments from the beautiful turquoise ocean. (c 150m). The beach door opens out onto a wide sandy path, leading up to the local bars/restaurants (who offer free Wi-Fi), dive centres & all other amenities. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the breathtakingly beautiful beach to Kendwa (subject to tides) or in the other direction to Nungwi’s turtle rescue sanctuary by the lighthouse. A choice of supermarkets is close-by, plus a pharmacy, internet café & gift shops. Travellers looking for a more laid-back experience in Zanzibar will just love it here! As soon as you arrive, you’ll want to kick off your flip flops and feel the sand between your toes in this wonderful space. Accommodation layout: Nungwi Retreat has 4 en-suite guest bedrooms, sleeping up to 10 people. Two rooms are on the ground level and two on the upper level (2 short flights of steps). Ground level rooms have seating outside the rooms on the terrace, whilst upper-level rooms have seating outside on the balcony, for guests to enjoy drinks before they go out for dinner. All guest bedrooms are spacious & airy, each has an en-suite wet-room (shower basin & W/C), smoke alarm & the choice of A/C or a fan if you prefer natural air with open windows. Nungwi Retreat can be rented in its entirety - perfect for a group of family & friends, or a pre/post safari group, writing groups, yoga & meditation groups etc; - or booked as individual rooms. Kombo (the owner) lives on site - his room is on the opposite side to guest rooms next to the kitchen/ diner. The property is set within a high walled courtyard for privacy & features stunning hand carved wood balustrades, coloured glass on windows & lovely cream tiles on the bedroom floors, terrace & balcony. The lovely sandy garden has many pretty plants & trees, such as papaya, avocado, aloe vera, lemons, guava & mangroves, which attract sweet little birds & pretty coloured butterflies. Please note, the kitchen is on the opposite side of the garden but is not for guest use as we are bed & breakfast only & NOT self-catering. Complimentary breakfast is served at the local beach bar overlooking the ocean. If the entire house is booked then a complimentary continental buffet breakfast is sometimes served in the breakfast/ diner area. ‘Zanzibar Adventures’ & Activities! Kombo or Ali, are very happy to help you organise any of the following - just ask - they can also arrange drivers for island tours / airport runs etc; There is something for everyone – from picturesque beach walks, snorkelling & diving, to horse riding, water sports, buggies, boat trips & island tours. Or you may like to wander to the local fish market, boat yard or through the village where you can purchase clothing, hats, bags, gifts & local crafts & paintings - we kindly ask that you please dress appropriately when in the village, to respect local culture. Mnemba & Timbatu Islands’ beautiful coral reefs, offer the most fabulous diving/snorkelling on the island. There’s deep sea & local fishing, boat trips, sunset cruises, water sports, local cycling & walking tours to the village, caves, blacksmith & more. Amazingly wonderful day-trips too e.g. historic Stone Town, Prison Island, Spice farms, Paje, Jozani Forest to see the colobus monkeys, stunning forest & mangroves, or Kizimkazi on the south coast to see & if you wish, swim the dolphins. ……Or just simply relax with a drink on the beach & watch the dhows & people go by in this very special place. Guests in the two ground floor rooms (Mauwa & Upendo) have their own seated terrace area in front of their rooms facing the garden. Guests in the two upper level rooms (Kipepeo & Amani) have a lovely balcony area overlooking the pretty sandy garden - access to the two bedrooms on the upper level are via two short flights of stairs. The pretty private sandy garden is perfect for reading / relaxing in private away from the beach or maybe playing cards with a drink before heading out for the evening. Please always ensure you lock your rooms and the beach gate when you leave the premises and always close the beach gate behind you when you return.The banda area (upstairs above the kitchen/ diner) is perfect for mediation or yoga, so you are welcome to bring your mat along. Currently guests are not permitted to use the main kitchen area, as it is bed & breakfast only and not self-catering but more-so currently due to Covid safety......Thank you so much. Kombo or Ali, can organise any activities, boat trips, island tours etc. or help in any way that they can. Kombo speaks fluent English and Swahili. They can organise your transfer to Nungwi Retreat (from the airport or ferry) if you wish - price subject to number of passengers. The scenic journey to Nungwi Retreat, takes approx. one hour & twenty-five minutes. Should there be anything at all that you are not happy with at any time, please talk to Kombo straight away, so it can be resolved for you. Nungwi Retreat is situated just back from the Union beach, which is on the quieter side of the beachfront / resort, a short walk along from the traditional fish market and boat yard. It is a approx. midway between 'Z' hotel (5-minute walk in left direction) and Double Tree Hilton (5-minute walk right direction) and moments from local beach bars, dive schools, taxis & all amenities. Subject to tides you can walk down to beautiful Kendwa for a leisurely lunch (or take a taxi if the tide is in) - then in the other direction, visit local beach bars, stroll past the fishing village to visit the wonderful turtle rescue sanctuary (near the lighthouse) where they work on projects to care for the environment & help turtles rescued by fisherman. Local walking/cycling tours take visitors into the local village, fisherman area, caves & more. Taxis can take you to local villages or for longer tours around the island. Travellers looking for a more laid-back but unique local experience will love it here! Beach bars, nearby hotels, dive centres, boat trips & restaurants are all walkable along the beach in both directions. Local walking and cycling tours are available. Private taxis may be booked to Stone Town, nearby villages or for tours around the island. Local buses are available on the main road by the entrance at the start of village, to take you into Stone Town, however these do get very overcrowded & they drive very fast. Transport to Accommodation - A driver can be arranged to collect you from the airport or ferry – the scenic Journey from Stone Town is around one hour and twenty-five minutes - price subject to number of passengers. Delays - If you have arranged to be met but are delayed, please call Kombo or Ali, with your new arrival time, so they can advise the driver - their numbers will be sent to you once a booking is made. If you’d like to hire a car from Stone Town, please check on the Internet, as we have no information/ any companies to recommend. Free parking close by. Travel Insurance Please ensure you & all your party have adequate travel insurance, as we cannot be held responsible for any delays or accommodation cancellations due to Covid19. Also, we are not responsible for any loss, damage or theft from a third party or any illness or accidents at Nungwi Retreat or the surrounding areas. COVID19 Please ensure you have had a vaccination or negative test. Also bring a good supply of face masks, disposable gloves and hand sanitiser with you - you'll be advised where to dispose of them hygienically (in bins provided). Normally rooms are cleaned by the house keepers but due to Covid you may prefer to tidy yourselves - please advise. Communal areas will be sanitised regularly by the housekeepers. Check in & out times are strict to allow for full sanitised cleaning / airing of rooms. Laundry There are no facilities for guests to wash clothes, but a laundry service is available. You may wish to have your parties’ clothes washed after travelling, if so, just ask. Price subject to amount. Linen & towels Bed Linen & room towels only are provided. Beach Towels - if you don’t want to pack beach towels, local shops & stalls sell Kikoys & kangas, which are inexpensive, versatile, light & dry quickly. Stairs Access to the two rooms on the upper level (& banda) are via two short flights of stairs - guests are kindly requested to supervise any children in their party AT ALL times, as we cannot be held responsible for them. Malaria tablets Please ensure you have an adequate supply of your prescribed malaria tablets. There is a pharmacy in the village but its stock can be limited. Mosquito repellents - All beds have mosquito nets (should you require) - but you are welcome to bring repellent plug-ins with you for extra protection (as they are not available in Nungwi). Also, we recommend spraying inside your room / mosquito net at sunset (a while before you go to bed). HIT or RAID can be bought in the local supermarket - please use as directed on the can. First Aid For hygiene / Covid safety, we recommend you bring your own supplies for first aid, and always have to hand (e.g. for stings, bites, minor cuts etc when out & about) - there a chemist nearby but stock can be limited. Sunscreen Is available in the village but there is not always much choice, so we recommend you bring it with you. Local supermarkets /Pharmacy Provide everyday general supplies: toiletries, water, fruit, snacks & drinks. Medicines. Local SIM cards also available. Water The water is NOT safe to drink or to brush your teeth with on Zanzibar, so please ensure you buy an adequate supply of bottled water (from the local supermarket or bars) to keep in your room / carry with you to drink throughout the day, to stay hydrated. Power cuts These can happen often on Zanzibar - they don’t usually last long, but we recommend each member of your party bring a torch to carry with them after sunset. Z-Spa There is a spa at Z-hotel offering massage & various beauty treatments (subject to any Covid19 restrictions). Cash Currency is U.S.$ or Tanzanian Shillings. There is an ATM on the Nungwi main road at the garage a short distance before you enter Nungwi Village. Or you can change up cash in the village. Please note, you usually get a better exchange rate in Stone Town. Security on premises Please do not leave valuables lying around & ensure your rooms & the beach door (& village gate) are always locked whenever you leave the premises, as the owners cannot be held responsible for theft, loss or damage. Smoking NOT permitted in the bedrooms. Smoke alarms are fitted in each bedroom & the kitchen area, for the safety of all. Please be respectful of others. FIRE Fire extinguishers, are located at each end of the upper balcony, on the lower terrace, the kitchen & by the stairs up to the owners’ private banda. In the event of fire, guests are to leave immediately & meet at The Blue Sea bar/restaurant at the local beach.
