Cozy Private Room, Orono
Our neighborhood is on the bluff above the Penobscot River, and is tucked back off of Orono's Main Street. The street is bounded by forest and fields, so it is also home to local wildlife. Orono has many restaurants, 3 micro-breweries, and a walking trail along the river. UMaine's Collins Center for Performing Arts is 1.5 miles and the Orono Bog Boardwalk is a 3 mile drive. Our home is a great place for solo adventurers, couples, academics, UMaine parents, and business travelers. For its first 70 years, the house was occupied by sisters who served as the town's midwives. Lots of babies were delivered in this home!! (Although my original plan was to have my twins here too, they were born at EMMC.) The guest room overlooks our quiet street. The queen bed has lots of pillows and a comforter. There are also several extra blankets in the room for your use; at least one each made of cotton, wool and acrylic. Your room has three large windows; two that look out to a lovely yard. You'll have sole use of the full bathroom that is down the hall from your room. The bathroom also has a washer/dryer and you are welcome to use it during your stay. In the evening, stroll up to town to enjoy Orono's night life. In the morning, enjoy sipping your coffee or tea and looking out on the 4 acres of fields and trees behind the house. Laurie will be available to help guests find their way around the area. Teenage twins Noam and Zivi, enjoy participating in local musical theater productions, so you may hear some singing while you are staying with us. Laurie's 'day job' is making buildings more energy efficient. Our street was once a farm road. The homes on our street were built as spec houses in 1906 by the farmer who raised dairy cows and sold milk in Orono. The farmer's daughters lived together in our home throughout their adulthood and were the local midwives- many babies were born here! Our neighbors include some primary school teachers, some UMaine faculty and staff, a Husson University faculty member, a librarian for the Orono Public Library, and a few retired folk. Residents of our little community range in age from toddler to elder. Our home is only a few steps from Main Street in Orono. The Bangor to UMaine bus stops at the corner. The bus to Campus runs from down town (Pine Street), a short walk from our home. Orono is a short (15 minute) car drive or (20 minute) bus ride to Bangor. The trail along the Penobscot River is a peaceful, beautiful easy walk. There are smooth trails for walking, running, biking, and skiing through the woods and fields of the UMaine campus. Brown's beach on the Stillwater branch of the river is a wonderful location for swimming, paddle boarding or kayaking. The Orono Bog Boardwalk is a few miles away.
