When was the last time YOU slept in school... and didn't get in trouble?! ; ) This is the original Paupack School... built in 1925, listed on the National Historic Register in 2016 and now re-imagined into a unique getaway experience. The first loft-style living space, Mrs Kroll's Classroom, is now available... *perfect* for a couple or solo traveler. Located in beautiful Paupack PA, within sight of Lake Wallenpaupack. (thepaupackschool) The former Paupack School, now a unique getaway experience, is an original 1925 one-story stucco-over-red brick Neo-Classical Revival-style school. Located on the north side of State Route 507 in Paupack PA, our 3 acre property includes a large open former schoolyard behind the building with a parking area, basketball court and open lawn. An ongoing renovation and restoration, the first rental space is Mrs. Kroll’s Classroom. Original details remain throughout this unique and eclectic 900+ sq ft light filled room including 14’ high ceilings, slate chalkboards, flooring, doors, trim and moldings. Period correct lighting has been salvaged locally and re-installed, along with other locally sourced artifacts, maps and antiques. Updated for modern living and comfort Mrs Kroll’s Classroom is a studio-style space complete with a queen size bed, *perfect* for a couple or solo traveler. Accessible by the original front steps and entry, the classroom itself is on one level with views of the yard, surrounding woods and Lake Wallenpaupack. Wood floors with area rugs, ceramic tile throughout the bathroom, granite counter tops and wood cabinets in the kitchen and coffee bar. Massive windows w/screens and blinds let in the clean mountain air and sunshine. No worries if the weather gets a bit warm as central air conditioning is also provided. Floor creaks and the “I can’t believe I’m sleeping in a classroom!” vibes are also included ; ) We are literally *surrounded* by outdoor activities! You’re anywhere between walking distance and 30 minutes drive from swimming, hiking, mountain biking, waterfalls, golf, skiing, antiquing, hunting and more! Fishing is year round on Lake Wallenpaupack or numerous nearby lakes, rivers and streams including the Lackawaxen with its excellent fly fishing opportunities. There is great antiquing as well in and around Hawley, with directions to some of our favorites included in your Welcome Pack! Access to the lake is a short drive away to both a hiking/running trail and the public beach (in season). There is no private lake access included. You’ll have access to Wi-Fi, internet connected TV (on a swivel base so you can watch from the living area, kitchen island, lounge or bed!), ample books and magazines, stereo with mini-jack hookup for your phone, tablet or laptop and record player with handpicked assortment of records. No traditional phone line is available. The kitchen is located on a massive 14’ long island and fully outfitted with everything you need to cook, bake or simply have a coffee while sitting at the island looking out at the yard and lake beyond. Granite counter tops, electric stove, microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator with several small appliances and a multitude of utensils, plates, glasses, bowls and more. Not interested in cooking? No worries! There are numerous dining opportunities, from coffee shops to pizza takeout to five stars, all within a short drive. Directions for the local grocery store, markets and seasonal farmers market are provided. One queen size bed with pillows and blankets is nestled between the living and lounge areas. The main bathroom is located between the front wall of the building and the living space, with separate rooms for the toilet, cast-iron claw foot tub and shower. On arrival you’ll receive your Welcome Pack listing our favorite restaurants, shops, hikes, waterfalls, coffee shops, shopping, activities and more throughout the area. We’ve also included directions to some of our favorite drives and destinations! You’ll feel like a local before you know it ; ) Please review the map included with our listing to note we are located on the North side of Route 507, facing Route 507. We've been restoring the school for several years, with many more to go. You may note some areas inside and out that we're still repairing and restoring... opting to take our time and get it right. That said, NONE of this will inhibit your stay... and we'd like your opinion on how we're doing! Lastly, we're unable to accommodate more than two guests, as noted, by having only one queen bed and no other sleeping accommodations. Beyond the reservation process and check-in process, I’ll happily stay in touch should you have any questions before, during or after your visit. You can call, email or text me throughout your stay and I’ll do all I can to ensure your visit is a great one! I am often on location and occasionally greet guests as they arrive. Lake Wallenpaupack the third largest freshwater lake in Pennsylvania measuring 52 miles of shoreline, 13 miles in length, 60 feet deep at points, with excess of 5,700 acres of surface water. It was created in 1926 by PPL, the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company, for hydroelectric purposes as well as flood control. The Lenape Indians named the area "Wallenpaupack" which means "The Stream of Swift and Slow Water." William Penn later owned the land and then deeded it to his son, who then gave it to James Wilson one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Enjoy boating, swimming and fishing access in the summertime, as well as ice skating and ice fishing in the winter. Its wooded shoreline also provides opportunities for hiking and viewing wildlife. Lake fish include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, bluegill, walleye, muskellunge, northern pike, pickerel, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout, catfish and yellow perch. Striped bass and hybrid striped bass have been stocked in the lake. Ample parking onsite. You will need a car to get around. Interested in skiing, snowboarding or tubing? Montage Mountain in Scranton is about 45 minutes West, Big Bear about 40 minutes North East, Camelback about 50 minutes South and Jack Frost about an hour South West.
