The Metro to the Smithsonian stop takes about 20 minutes to downtown DC. There are no restaurants within walking distance. Washer and dyer is also available as well as a ping pong table. The New Carrolton Metro (Orange line) is about 2 miles away and there is public bus G12, 13,16, thats takes you right there. However, to save you some grief, my recommendation is that you stay closer to where you need to be if you do not have a car. Relying on the public bus is probably not the best use of your time.
