Welcome to the Hennessey Cottage Island Retreat on Deer Island in Atlantic Canada. New Brunswick is known as the picture province and Deer Island is its masterpiece. Enjoy views from all 3 levels of this beautiful oceanfront cottage with private shoreline along Clam Cove on Bay of Fundy. The Island is connected to the mainland by a free ferry passing Saint Andrews and Maine along the 20-minute ride. Campobello Island, Herring Cove P.P., Old Sow Tidal Pool and the Hopewell Rocks are all close by. Burt and I designed this oceanfront home with 3 stories and wraparound decks that offer three different breathtaking views at all levels. Constructed during the summer of 2020, the property offers 1 large master bedroom with King bed, ensuite bathroom, including full laundry facilities, a common space on the main level with a Queen futon and a large open concept suite on the walkout level with 2 Queen beds, a private, full bathroom and work space with desk, chair, printer, paper and ink. The main level offers a full kitchen and dining area with panoramic views of the Bay of Fundy. Every inch of the property is filled with something to explore during your stay. Even in the house, there are games, binoculars, cards, books and pictures that will help distract you from the odd rainy day. The Hennessey Cottage is located on 9 acres of old growth, red spruce-filled Acadian Forest with several hiking trails to access the private shoreline along Clam Cove. Kayaks are available for experienced paddlers and there are lessons available on the island for the novice kayaker. The shore is cleared with areas to sit and get lost in the sounds of the Atlantic Ocean and the wildlife all around you. Guests will have access to the entire property, including all 3 floors of the house, the shed and to the hiking trails to the shore. There are several trails cleared on the property and guests have access to the entire 9 acres. Appropriate foot wear and clothing is recommended as the trails are hiking trails and not walking trails. The shore is easy walking with a large, cleared and flat area to explore. Walking down to the shore is like walking downstairs on Christmas morning; you can never be sure of what the ocean brought you since the night before. Burt and I want our guests to enjoy the Hennessey Cottage in private seclusion. While we will leave you to enjoy the property, we are available via text and phone call to answer any questions or concerns. There are too many unique landmarks and destinations close by to list. Deer Island is within driving distance to the St. Andrew-by-the-sea, Campobello Island, Grand Manan Island, the Old Sow Tidal Bore, the Hopewell Rocks, Reversing Falls in Saint John and so many other world-famous attractions. Staying at the Hennessey Cottage will provide a restful place to sleep after wonderful days spent hiking, paddling, exploring and eating fresh seafood caught that day. While the attractions above are fantastic and all worth the drive...we have hosted guests that did not leave the Island. The property itself can be a one or two-day adventure, especially if you take the kayaks out for a spin or try your hand at clamming. The trails offer a landscape unlike many have ever experienced. The old growth red spruce that populate the Acadian Forest surrounding the house offer a "Lord of the Rings"-caliber backdrop for your hiking and exploring adventures. Regardless of whether you are looking for adrenalin or tranquility, the forest on your doorstep is easily enjoyed with your morning beverage on the wraparound Cedar deck. You can let Oceanview Takeout fry up some clams or the 45th Parallel Restaurant whip up a lobster roll. Absolutely indescribable! If you are looking for some unique souvenirs, there are several boutique art galleries and gift shops on the island, including the Spirit of the Island Crafts, Fine Arts & Custom Made Furniture that is located at the Deer Island Ferry landing in Lord's Cove or the Fireball Art Gallery just a little further down the road. If you are looking for larger gifts or authentic fishing gear and other apparel, visit Boatique across the island in Hibernia Cove. The Island is easy to navigate with excellent signage. Get to know the Deer Island Ferry schedule, which can be found on the Coastal Transport Limited website. Never rush for the ferry, as you will catch the one you were meant to catch. The ride on the ferry is a picturesque journey that brings you back to a different time. Enjoy it and embrace Island life by truly being present in the moment. Every moment on the Island has something to see whether a Minke whale breaches the surface during the ferry ride, an eagle swoops down to the ocean to rip a salmon from the water or a wild turkey flies past the kitchen deck while you are boiling lobsters you bought that afternoon at the Lords Cove Wharf...there is something worth being present. All of which have happened to Burt and I since building the cottage! There so many more attractions and amenities nearby that were not mentioned in the Neighbourhood Description section. Minister's lsland in Sanit-Andrews-by-the-sea, Greens Point Lighthouse, Head Harbour Lighthouse on Campobello, Blacks Harbour (nice little bar on the way too - Harbour Road Pub and Eatery) and countless beaches are all within minutes of the Hennessey Cottage and each offers a new place to explore. You simply cannot visit any of these places without stopping at Ossie's Lunch in Bethel for something to eat, like their world famous fried clams and lobster rolls. Walk-up ordering and an intercom let's you wait in your vehicle until your order is ready. For additional ideas and day trips, Burt and I have provided customized videos to guests, depending on whether or not we are on the Island immediately before they arrive. If not, we have stock videos that can information to help plan your stay. The Deer Island Ferry leaves L'Etete (St. George) and arrives in Lord's Cove on Deer Island. The ferry runs every hour 6:30-7:30am and every half hour after that until 7:30pm at which point it goes back to running every hour until 10:30pm. The Deer Island Ferry schedule is available online at deerisland.coastaltransport. You can access Deer Island from Lubec, Maine by first driving to Campobello Island and taking the Campobello Ferry, which is not free and usually runs seasonally. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Campobello has been running more permanently. Check the website for updates on the schedule and the fares are: One Way Fare (CDN): Car & Driver - $22.00 Passengers - $5.00 12 years & under - No charge Car Maximum - $34.00 Motor Coaches - $100.00 Motorcycles - $14.00 Bicycles/Passenger - $ 6.00 Large Trucks & Trailers $1.75 per foot
