Greenbrier River is good for a day-long kayak trip, the New River is great for river rafting, and the Bluestone Lake is wonderful for boating and a day of water skiing. Amtrak Rail Service serves the small community of 2000 residents with trains to major destinations on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday. Easy walk to train depot from our home. Venture on with a leisurely stroll throughout Hinton's National Historic District and see the many homes and buildings featuring beautiful architecture. Along the way, guests can stop and browse in the Hinton Railroad Museum or one of the trendy downtown shops or go for a walk across the long bridge spanning the New River for a great photo opportunity. Hinton is full of mountains lakes rivers and beautiful scenery. Along with the winding rivers found in Hinton (the New, Greenbrier, and Bluestone), the National Park service has designated a 52-mile stretch of river creating the New River Gorge National River and Scenic parkway and America's newest national park. Beautiful overlooks are found along this route. Sandstone Falls is a popular tourist destination where a Lassie movie was filmed in the 1990s starring Helen Slater and Jon Tenney. A boardwalk takes visitors out to the falls for breathtaking photo opportunities. Nearby there are two state parks (Pipestem Resort, Bluestone State Park) located in the countryside which offer golf, horseback riding, great restaurants, indoor/outdoor pools, and many beautiful hiking trails. There is a scenic aerial tram at Pipestem Resort that takes visitors deep into the Bluestone Gorge for a wonderful dining experience. The Oak Supper Club and Brandon's Barbecue Restaurants are two popular dining spots near these parks. Bluestone Lake and marina, the magnificent Bluestone Dam, Bluestone Wildlife Hunting and Fishing area, are nearby as are many whitewater rafting outfitters. Be sure to visit the John Henry Memorial Park in Talcott, site of the famous man versus machine contest, and see the tunnel where the legendary John Henry prevailed! Historic Lewisburg and the world famous Greenbrier Resort (White Sulphur Springs) are a short drive away. The Greenbrier Resort is like revisiting the homes and setting found in the film 'Gone With the Wind'. There is a casino, fabulous world class restaurants, a bunker that was declassified in the 90s (designated to house members of Congress in the case of an attack on our homeland). The bunker is now open for tours and is magnificent! Lost World Caverns are located in Historic Lewisburg and are well worth the trip. Open year round. Guests will have access to entire second floor suite of rooms filled with antique furnishings including queen bedroom, private bath, library, private balcony, formal living room, dining room and front porch sitting area. Suite has mini refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and coffeemaker. I like to greet my guests, show them throughout the home, then make myself available thereafter only as needed so as to give my guests the privacy they desire. Our home is like a museum and we want guests to make themselves at home and enjoy an experience they will never forget! The city of Hinton was established in 1873, near the confluence of the New, Greenbrier & Bluestone rivers, Hinton became the county seat of Summers County and an important railroad center on the Chesapeake & Ohio in the late 1800's. While much of the railroad operation has faded away, a great deal of the residential and commercial architecture built from 1895 to 1929 remains along with the spectacular scenery of the surrounding area. The Greenbrier River is great for canoeing and kayaking, the legendary John Henry tunnel (site of the man versus machine victory) is found nearby along with Historical Lewisburg, and the world famous Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The Greenbrier is owned by West Virginia’s Governor, Jim Justice, and is like revisiting the homes and setting of Gone With the Wind. The bunker’s primary purpose was to protect members of Congress in the case of an attack on our homeland. The bunker is now open for tours and is magnificent! Historic Hinton is accessible from scenic WV Route 20 approximately 10 miles from the I-64 Sandstone-Hinton Exit 139 from the North and from I-77 approximately 10 miles from Pipestem State Park Resort to the South. Hinton is an AmTrak community with passenger trains on the Cardinal each Sun/Wed/Fri. Purchase tickets online to board (or arrive) in Hinton and travel to many destinations. No smoking or vaping inside. No unregistered guests or extra invitees. No Pets. No gatherings at home.
