Goreme The village of Goreme sits in the Goreme Valley, which has been a National Park since 1985. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site. Goreme is located in the region known as Cappadocia (Kapadokya in Turkish). It is an alluring combination of natural beauty with its extraordinary geological landscape, and fascinating ancient history. What is most striking about Cappadocia is its many beautiful valleys and the unusual pinnacles of rock known affectionately as fairy chimneys. This extraordinary landscape has been shaped by erosion over many centuries. Millions of years ago Cappadocia had a number of active volcanoes, the majestic Mount Erciyes being one of them. Ancient volcanic eruptions blanketed the area in very deep layers of ash which solidified to a soft rock known as tuff. Over time wind and rain eroded this soft rock to create the valleys and fair chimneys we see today. Centuries ago different civilisations took advantage of the soft rock to carve dwellings, food depots, and animal shelters in the valleys, in the fairy chimneys, as well as underground. This included underground refuges, known as underground cities, and small churches with gorgeous frescoes, which can still be visited and seen today.
