Welcome to the Captain Locke room in the historic 1797 House (its birth year) in one of America’s original gated communities. The walls are long gone, though, and we now welcome the world to our home along the Connecticut River with an morning cup of freshly ground organic coffee. Close to UMass, Mount Holyoke, Amherst, Smith and Hampshire colleges, as well as Northampton & I-91. Your room is a cheerful, bright second floor retreat that many visitors have shown an immediate fondness for since we hosted our first guest in March of 2018. If you need more space, consider booking our other bedroom: https://www.airbnb.com/h/1797house-dawsonroom Please make yourself at home in the kitchen, dining room and all outdoor spaces. Marcy and Andrew (and Betty The Beagle) love to socialize, but will give guests as much space as they need. Well, Betty won’t, especially if you have any food on your person. She will probably try to snuggle but let us know if that is just TOO MUCH! (We understand ... oh, beagles) Lovers of history and nature will love our place. This home was built by Revolutionary War captain Joseph Locke, who ran the nearby ferry that once transported people and goods to Hatfield. We believe we are the 12th stewards/owners of this Federal-style gem. We sit on West Street common, which was once part of a palisaded settlement. Gen. Joseph Hooker, who led the North is several large Civil War battles, was born and raised on this street. And we even had our own “witch”, Mary Webster, to whom “The Handmaid’s Tale” was dedicated. (She was sent to Boston to be tried for witchcraft, was found innocent, which the Hadley folk did not like, so they tried — and failed — to hang her!) We are located near an amazing rail trail that connects with Northampton, Amherst and points beyond. Two wonderful restaurants, Esselon Cafe and Alina’s restaurant, are a short stroll down our beautiful common. Guests are welcome to park in front of the garage or the lawn directly in front of the house. You can get here on public transport, too. Our house is a 10 minute walk from the PVTA bus stop on Route 9. Uber and Lyft are active in our area. We added a gorgeous upstairs bathroom on May 11, 2019! We offer tea, coffe. You are welcome to use kitchen for preparing more hearty fare. We have owned the 1797 House since late 2016, so our work to maintain and improve it goes on. So too are our efforts to make your stay the best it can be!
