The Hay Loft | A Remote Riverside Guest House
The Hay Loft is a guest house with a bright, open-concept design on the upper floor of a log home style barn. The property is well off the road and has access to the river. Wifi, Netflix, free parking. Enjoy your private balcony, go for a swim, or sit & enjoy the river from our private dock. The Trans Canada Trail is less than 2km away - great for hiking, biking, or skiing. Rushton's Beach, just a 10 min drive away, is a sandy beach with warm water. Wentworth ski hill is a 40-minute drive. Get away from the city and enjoy a relaxing and peaceful stay on our little hobby farm! It's a little off the beaten path on the river's edge, surrounded by nothing but trees. Wake up to the sounds of the birds and our trumpeter swans. Take a relaxing stroll down our gravel road or just hang out and enjoy the peace. The Hay Loft is located on the upper floor of our 'log home' style, renovated barn. Bring your kayak, canoe, or paddleboards, or just enjoy a swim off our private dock in the warm water of River John. River John is a tidal river that has both fresh and saltwater. It goes up and down with the ocean tides. Access to the dock is just a short walk past our house and down several stairs. There's free wifi and Netflix so you can just Netflix and chill if you want. The space is best suited to 2 people but we do have 2 couches (not pull-outs) and bedding for them if needed. There is a full kitchen and a bbq for your use. The convenience store just 5 min away is well stocked with necessities if you need anything and even has a Chinese restaurant with Chinese and Canadian options. If you're craving some ice cream you can head over to Cohen's Cones located near the bridge in downtown River John. Other restaurants and a grocery store are within a 15-minute drive. Bring your bikes - the Trans Canada Trail access is not far away. It's about an hour and a half bike ride to either Pictou or Tatamagouche on the trail which is relatively flat and well maintained. Enjoy the trumpeting songs of the swans in our ponds while you enjoy your dinner on the balcony with a great view of the river and beautiful sunsets. You may even get a glimpse of the pair of bald eagles that nest across the river from us! There's also a fire pit and barbecue in the cozy patio area for your use. Indoor storage is available for bikes if necessary and we can even pump up your tires or give you access to tools for small repairs. Please be assured that we are taking extra steps to clean and sanitize frequently touched surfaces between reservations. Our house is a little log home on the property (on the opposite side of the driveway) but we try to give our guests as much privacy as possible. While you're here you are welcome to use the dock on the river. The river is great for swimming, kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding so make sure to bring your swimsuit! There are beach towels for your use in the closet. We live on the property with our 2 sons that are in their 20's. We try to keep to ourselves as much as possible when there are guests here but you may see us working in the garden or in the workshop. We have free range chickens that roam the property and swans, ducks, and geese in a couple ponds that you can see from the balcony. River John is a quiet, historical village. It gets pretty busy during the festival in July though. Things to do nearby: The tasting room at the whiskey distillery Visit the sheep farm/market Take a trip to the winery Hang out on one of the sandy beaches Hike or bike the Trans Canada Trail There is no public transportation. You will need a car or a bike to get to most places. We have 2 dogs (they will be contained while you are here) and a cat. Also free-range chickens, swans, geese, and ducks.
