The house sits on a fenced lined property on the southern island of Twillingate called Durrell. The neighbours are lovely and one of them is a shipyard where you can watch the boats come and go. Twillingate is one of the most picturesque outports in central Newfoundland. Famous for its reputation of being the 'Iceberg Capital of the World'. As early as May-June, these massive ice sculptures literally drift in and around the island. Watch them dodging around the arm from the bedrooms or yard when they are around! Twillingate has an incredible coastal hiking trail system known as the Rockcut Trails. They feature 25kms of connected coastal trails which are well groomed and mapped out for you to explore. Up harbour, several amazing chartered boat tours offer you different types of sailing experiences. From a small intimate boat tour out jiggin cod to a large scale Zodiac boat, there's a tour for everyone in town. If a sunset kayak tour is something that interests you, we've got that as well! Literally up the street is the Auk Island Winery, which produces award winning Newfoundland berry & iceberg wines...not too mention it has a great family restaurant and gift shop. Most restaurants operate from May to September, with an offering of fine dining to good old fish and chips, there’s a menu for every tastebud. Be sure to visit the Fish Market, the Artisan market, with picnic lunches and bike rentals available. Several cafés are all within a short drive from the Pumpkin House for that morning caffeine fix! A few pubs & a dynamite brewery called the Split Rock, serve a variety of local craft beers from around the island. If you were looking for something fun to do with the gang, our local dinner theatres serves up a darn good meal and some good laughs. There are also several museums and the Long Point Lighthouse to visit. Learn more about the history of the wooden boat builders of Newfoundland and their craft. Twillingate is about an hour and a half drive to the Fogo Island ferry...making it an enjoyable day trip. If a day at the beach is something you enjoy, we highly recommend checking out our beaches of Twillingate or take a short road trip to breathtaking, sandy beaches of Lumsden! A car is a must when visiting Newfoundland! Please be sure that you have secured a car rental first as a priority. We are hearing about a current rental car shortage. This is due to the rental companies selling their fleets during the pandemic and now having a difficult time to replace their vehicles. Car rentals are available in the major cities and at their airports. Twillingate is actually made up of two islands connected by a “tickle” bridge on what’s known as iceberg alley. The Pumpkin House is located on the South Island in the outport of Durrell. We are... --- 1.5hrs north of Gander --- 5.5hrs west of St. John's --- 7 hrs east of Gros Morne ideally located in Central Newfoundland! For our guests taller than 6 feet...just a heads-up! As the Pumpkin House is a historical building and retains most of its 19th century architecture, it may not be suitable for all accessibility needs. Ceiling heights are a minimum of 6'7". The scale of the Pumpkin House is quite cozy- check out our reviews!
