Canta a mi Alma (Sings to my Soul) is a civilized off-grid rental apartment within the Gila National Forest, 30 minutes from downtown Silver City, NM. The apartment is about 528 sq ft and has a private entrance. There is a kitchen/living area, 2 bedrooms and a full bath. The views from the property are amazing; a photographer's and artist's delight. The Continental Divide Trail is 1.5 miles from the apartment. There are many trails to explore in the Gila National Forest. CANTA A MI ALMA (Sings to my Soul) is a civilized off-grid retreat within the Gila National Forest. Recharge yourself with amazing views of the Gila Wilderness. Listen to the wind in the pinon and junipers and look out to Mogollon Baldy, the highest peak in the Gilas at 11,000 feet above sea level. Surrounding mountains are the Mogollon Range, the Pinos Altos Range, Bear Mountain and Tadpole Ridge. Become one with nature by COMFORTABLY living off grid for your stay. The 50 acre property is bordered on two sides by the 3.2 million acres of the Gila National Forest. The nearest neighbor is a mile away. Help yourself to fresh herbs for cooking that are just outside your door. Sit and watch hummingbird wars from the portico. Have you ever been curious about what it would be like to live totally off-grid yet comfortably? Your electricity is powered by solar. You will not find energy hogs like a microwave or a toaster in the apartment, but you will have a range with an oven that works just as well. Since this property is totally off-grid you will not have a Keurig to make coffee but will make better coffee with a French press (directions will be provided). There is no dishwasher, and I ask that you wash your dishes. For those that can’t leave behind electronic devices there is a TV with a DVD player, internet (though slow) and sometimes even cell phone service (there are no land lines). The water is from a well on the property, and the shower head is complete with a water saving setting if you choose. Please note: There is sometimes a price to pay Mother Nature. During monsoons and snows a 4x4 vehicle with clearance will be needed to navigate the mud. It is 9 miles of dirt forest roads to get here. If there haven't been rains/snow, a car can get here as long as it isn't too low to the ground. For example, my normal vehicle is a Subaru Forester but If there is mud I use my 4x4 Ford truck. Guest access Guests have access to the entire property, access to the Gila National Forest (at front and back gates) and the Continental Divide Trail (1.5 miles from apt). There is a outside propane grill and table/chairs for outside dining. With advance notice and additional fee there is horse back riding 3 miles from the apartment. Interaction with guests I live next door with a dog and a few cats. I will be available to provide items you might need (iron/board, spices, etc), directions and suggestions for things to do or places to eat. Other things to note Canta a mi Alma is located within the National Forest. That being said there are wild animals around as well as my 3 Icelandic horses,dog and cats. I strongly suggest use of a 4x4 vehicle to get here. There are 9 miles of rough and unpaved forest roads to get to the apartment. With any type of precipitation, the roads become very muddy and slick.
