The Charles Cheney Inn is a very comfortable mansion with high ceilings, beautifully restored bathrooms, and comfy beds. We provide a continental breakfast with the best coffee, teas, and orange juice, muffins, breads, bagels made daily, and, fresh fruits. The Charles Cheney Inn was original build in 1839 for Charles Cheney by his two brothers Seth and Ralph Cheney. They built this home for there brother who had moved his family of six two daughter, two sons and his wife to Ohio from Manchester to grow Mulberry Trees on a farm his family had purchased. The Mulberry trees were to feed the silk worms that they weaved the silk from. He had failed at being able to farm the trees and had lost his wife and two daughters to illness while there. They build the home so he would have a place to come home to. He remarried but never had any more children. The house was then inherited by his son Charles. The second Charles Cheney was best friends with Mark Twain and when Mark Twain was building his home in 1874 he fell in love with his home. He had his home remodeled after Mark Twains Home. There is a lot of his influences in this mansion. We have a window in the third floor chimney like the Mark Twains House. You can view the window from the gardens next to the Koy pond. We have a lot of history in this home and on the grounds it sits on. They call the land "The Great Lawn" Our neighborhood is in a Historical Mansion District that was once owned by the Cheney Family most of these homes were build in the early 1800s. The Cheney Family made there fortune in weaving fabric. The family was the only mill owners in the United States to live right next to there mills and mill workers. The down of Manchester was built by the Cheney family. Still today as you walk down our Main St you see there influence in a lot of the building. From our Silk City Antiques to our Silk City Coffee Shop, and Cheney library that sits on a beautiful park. There are many different restaurants to visit. Our Main St is a 2 block walk from Charles Cheney Inn. We also have a bus stop at the end of our driveway or a taxi service. The bus station is located in Hartford that is a ten minute drive off 84 highway in to downtown Hartford
