Our renovated 1910 farmhouse situated in the peaceful neighborhood of South Bar, about 10 minutes north of downtown Sydney, is sure to soothe the soul. Enjoy walks along the rocky beach, pick berries on the land or just unwind on the deck watching the sunset. The recently built lookout point at the water's edge provides views of Sydney harbor and North Sydney with sunsets that you won't soon forget. Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Sydney, this is a great home base to explore Cape Breton. **Airbnb suspended our account without any warning, apparently because we didn't put in big letters - no parties or events'** So just in case those twits at Airbnb are reading this - No Events or Parties. Back to the good stuff... Renovated turn of the century Farm House in the picturesque community of South Bar in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia… The Farm House was originally built in 1910 and sits on over 7 acres of land stretching down to its own beach on Sydney Harbor. This property was in the same family since the 1700's when this area was first settled. The home was renovated in 2012, including a large Chef’s Kitchen with new appliances and large island. Layout: Main floor - large dining room, living room, kitchen, bathroom (with shower) and laundry room (with new laundry appliances). We have a flat screen TV in the living room and wireless high speed internet, we do not have Cable TV but have cables on site to hook up laptops and Ipads. There is also a DVD player and a music player with USB. The kitchen really steals the show with its large island and all the things you need to create culinary magic! In 2018 we built a deck off the back of the house with french doors leading into the dining room, the sunsets from this vantage point will not disappoint. Second floor - four bedrooms and large bathroom with a huge soaker tub. There is one queen bed, two double beds and one bunk bed (sleeps 8 comfortably). The basement and attic are currently undeveloped and locked off. This home is conveniently located within 10/15 minutes of almost everything including the Airport, the University, Downtown Sydney and the Mall. It sits on a beautiful stretch of road that runs along the oceanfront from Sydney to New Waterford. Our neighbors are very friendly and have lived in the area their whole lives, great people to talk to about the history of the area. You can walk along the rocky beach when the tide is out to the lobster pound to pick up fresh lobster off the boats for dinner (during Lobster season). Or spend time picking raspberries and blueberries on the land. This home is perfect for young families with children, older families who want to unplug, couples on a romantic getaway, bikers, or professionals on work contracts. Kids can safely play in the meadows or walk down the path to the beach, picking berries along the way. It is a perfect base camp to discover Cape Breton. Cape Breton is rich with history and culture and provides endless opportunities to explore historic sites, listen to local musicians, eat local food, shop at the local farmer's market, tour the coal mines in beautiful Glace Bay or tour the Cabot Trail, one of the most beautiful places on earth! But the one thing that stands out over everything else when visiting the area are the people - they are truly some of the friendliest caring people you will meet, and they speak with a great accent all their own! In terms of things to do, this area provides endless opportunities... •Sydney's population is approximately 30,000, the area offers all the amenities.of any urban area, just a short drive away •The Highlands - Canada's highest ranking golf course, ranked number 8 in the world. •Fort Louisbourg - one of the oldest Forts in the Americas. •Cabot Trail - rated as one of the most scenic drives on planet earth!. •The village of Baddeck is about a 50 minute drive - it is a sailing mecca, with beautiful little shops, homes, cafes and music. •Alexander Graham Bell's home, his family still lives here. •Canada's only single malt scotch distillery. Glenora. •There is even a small ski hill about 25 minutes away, with a great golf course attached. •Cruise ships, the largest ones in the world, now dock in Sydney. •The ferry port to Newfoundland is right across from our property. •Many beautiful sandy beaches between 15mins and 1hr drive •PEI is only about a 5hr drive, as is New Brunswick. •The US is very accessible by plane or car. •There are some new vineyards and wineries that have opened in the last several years - the climate here is surprisingly mild and the land fertile •Lobsters, lots and lots of lobsters •Mountain biking, hiking, dirt biking, running, motorbiking tours, climbing, skidooing, camping, hunting, sailing, historical land marks, farming - culinary potential and even bingo! •The weekend Farmer's Market really highlights the local culture and is a great place to take kids •Local music is endless •There are some great new restaurants •And lots of festivals and live music This area is truly a hidden jewel and is welcoming for everyone; it is quickly becoming a travel destination as more and more people realize what Cape Breton has to offer, and at a fraction of the cost of some of the neighboring provinces. Guests have access to the entire home but the attic and basement are locked off and only accessible by the housekeeper. We do not allow pets and smoking is strictly prohibited in the house. 'Parties or events' are not permitted. Guests have full access to the entire property. South Bar is a small community on the ocean about 10 minutes drive from down town Sydney. There are no stores or services directly in South Bar, but everything is a 10 to 15 minute drive away. Bicycles or a vehicle are the best way to get around. The roads and views make for incredible motorbiking as well. Please strip the beds you use, place used towels in the bath tub and throw out any perishable food. Also put dirty dishes in the dishwasher and turn on before leaving - this is great help for our housekeeper. Please use the recycling containers provided, Nova Scotia has strict garbage policies in place.
