Salt Cay's Salt Hill House

Ready to kick back? Salt Cay is known as the island time forgot. Salt Hill House is the last house to the south on this safe, laid back, secluded Island. With unobstructed views of the ocean from east to west, sunrises and sunsets are amazing. 99% of the time, no matter what you choose to do on Salt Cay, you'll have it all to yourself... Well, unless you count the numerous donkeys, cows, chickens and cats. We are lucky to call Salt Hill House home and can't wait to share it with you! This open-plan home is very comfortable and offers ample indoor and outdoor spots to rest and enjoy the shade and steady caribbean breezes. Or the sun and the heat, if that's what you're looking for. There's a comfortable queen in the bedroom and a dresser and ample closet space. A futon in the living room as well as two XL Twin memory foam mattresses with folding frames that can be used on the porch for maximum privacy. (There are also two air mattresses if needed) The bathroom is well stocked with towels and essentials... but bring lots of sunscreen! The kitchen has it all, coffee pot with filters, toaster, a new blender, everything you need to make a home-cooked meal. The generous porch has a couch and two chairs with ottomans. This is a heavenly spot to spend hot afternoons. Off the porch is a lovely, very private sunbathing area. The house has decking around it, so it's an easy walk to the outdoor shower, clothesline, and seating area at the northern entrance to the house. Enjoy the incredible views of Salt Cay from our new view deck. You'll have a nearly 360 degree view of ocean and can even see breeching whales when they're in town. The south creek offers some bonefish for the experienced fly fisher. While you won't find epic numbers, you can have the opportunity to cast to some seriously big bones! All while turtle watching and in the company of flamingos. The beach and creek are a two-minute, private walk from the house down the drive or through the bush. The house has a neighbor to the north, (currently not being used due to hurricane damage) but that's it. Otherwise, it's just undeveloped Crown Land. All you can hear is the ocean, the donkeys, the cows and the roosters. The star gazing is amazing as are full moons! It's a modestly sized house, but there are endless opportunities for comfort. Likewise, it's a small island, but there are endless opportunities for adventure. The house has bikes. There is one old "beater". Then we have four new (2018) 26" Firmstrong beach cruisers. (One mens and three womens) There's a TV with many DVDs , and a stereo with CD player. If you want to plug into the stereo with your own device, there's an 1/8" jack attached to plug into your device. If you would like laundry done in the middle of the week, please let the cleaning person know and she'll do one load of personal items for you on the house. The kitchen sink has a separate filtered tap that is treated with a recently installed UV light system and is totally safe for drinking. (Only at kitchen sink from specific tap... NOT in bathroom) We keep a Brita pitcher in the fridge that can be used for slightly better taste, though I can't really tell the difference. We recommend bringing water bottles. Camelbak water backpacks are awesome to have. Water can be scarce on Salt Cay. It all comes from rain and in the dryer months we can run low. We ask that you conserve as much as you can. If you use too much, we can run low and be forced to cut our season short. Also, there are small (VERY small) stores but no big grocery stores here. Our friend will shop for you on neighboring Grand Turk before you're arrival. Get us a grocery list via AirBnB message a month before your visit and she'll have it in the fridge when you arrive. You'll pay our caretaker cash for this when you get on island. Be sure to stop at duty free for wine and liquor. It's BYO unless it's beer (and that would need to be on your grocery list). On WiFi, this is a tiny island. The house currently has NO WiFi, but please ask... we're working on it! If you must be in communication, get an international data plan and you'll be easily in communication with your world. If you'd rather leave all that behind and be unplugged, go for it. My on-island people will help you out and stay connected with me while you're there. When we brought the kids for the first time I unplugged and it was a vacation like no other. I live in the States and manage from here. My on-island people are kind, intelligent, reliable and my friends. I'm happy to help you with all questions and concerns and will communicate via AirBnB. On island, you can direct local questions to them and they'll keep me posted. Salt Cay is a 2.5 square mile island with nearly 8 continuous miles of undeveloped, public beach. From sugar sand to big sur-like cliffs to a creek with a chalky blue lagoon full of sea turtles (quick walk from the house and awesome kayak spot), you think you're going to get it all in, but no matter how hard you try you won't. We can't keep ourselves from the "swimming pool" at Dunscombe Point (across from the salinas--next to the big white stone house) and the beach combing on the beach just north is amazing. Also, as mentioned, the island is full of cows and donkeys and chickens and cats. It thrills the child in all of us. They are all kind and comfortable with humans. However, use common sense when approaching animals. If they act like they don't want you there, then move along. There are four restaurants on Island. Oceanaire Bistro, Coral Reef at Salt Cay Divers, Fresh Catch, and Pat's Place. All require reservations for dinner and dinner orders placed by 2pm. The Dive Shop will take you out on amazing snorkeling, diving, and other adventures. Getting close to the glorious humpbacks is a thrill. They hang around from late Jan-April. Also, you can just sit on the dock and look and listen. Whales! If you're a diver or a fisherman or a human, you probably won't want to leave the island. We first brought our twins when they were 8 and it was the perfect balance of adventure and ease. Don't be afraid to bring the kids. They will have an all-out blast. How to get there: Covid-19 TCI Travel Requirements: You must receive travel pre-authorization via the TCI Assured Portal to enter the country: (Website hidden by Airbnb) We find direct US/CA flights to Providenciales all the time for around $400. It's 4 hours from the northeast. To get to Salt Cay, you'll take a flight from Providenciales to Salt Cay via InterCaribbean, if they have flights that day. They have a limited schedule. Please check their website for details. You can also come by boat. The Salt Cay ferry runs Tuesday, Wednesday (half day) and Friday. You can pick it up in Grand Turk. It's cheap--$12. If you want an on-demand boat, contact the Dive Shop. However you get there, we'll pick you up and bring you to the house. As mentioned, the house has bikes and that's my preferred method for getting around. The constant breeze practically pushes you along. However, many people rent golf carts. They can run about $600 a week and at high season can actually sell out, so you'll want to get on this sooner than later, if you know you need to have one. Kayaking in the creek is cool. Check with the Dive Shop for rentals on all things gear: snorkel/dive, kayaks, etc... A few house rules: First, the people who live on Salt Cay are amazing, intelligent, informed, resilient, kind and wildly generous. Please be kind and respectful to everyone from the minute you land in Provo until the time you leave TCI. As our guests, that's our first rule. Tipping our people on island is encouraged. Second, as mentioned above, please conserve water. We're not kidding. If it doesn't rain, the cistern goes dry. Simple as that. Third, the island has a lot of cows and donkeys that we love, but you MUST keep the gates closed and latched at ALL TIMES. No exceptions. Those silly donkeys will walk right into the living room. TRASH.... There is NO recycling on Salt Cay. Please use the separate containers in the kitchen for paper and burnables and plastic, metal and glass. We are asking our guests to take as many recyclables home with them as they can. We do this ourselves on every trip to Salt Cay. Please help us make and keep Salt Cay clean. Save and feed all food waste to the animals.
