The old church in the main square is worth a stop on Sunday mornings – it’s been in use since the 17th century, and presides over the square where for generations slaves we auctioned. Also in town are the Cuevas, strange hollowed out limestone formations that have accommodated locals in hurricanes and indigents for generations? It’s a stunning beautiful park it the center of town, right of #187. Maria de la Cueva. El Parilla is just east of Villas Del Mar, on the south side of 187, has nice local fare friday-sunday. The crab here is the best in Puerto Rico. Francisco, Frankie, the patron, is always fun. Don’t miss a visit here! Sylvia’s, near El Parilla, is the source for decadent fried everything! We are told it is very good. There are several Fruitas y Vegetales stands along 187. The Farmacia at the corner now has a pretty good selection of foods, including frozen items. The main village square has small shops, dry cleaners, library, police station and the closest ATM machine. Further east, near the turn off for the Wyndham resort, is Don Pepe’s, which has excellent local delicacies, as well as mainland favorites, and their own imports of good Spanish wine. Oriented… Thanks you for choosing Villas del Mar Beach Resort, penthouse Villas del Mar Beach Resort in Loiza is about 15 miles east of San Juan on the north shore of Puerto Rico. We are close to the City of San Juan (30 minutes driving), and beautiful beaches. It is the ideal place to relax, quiet, safe and beautiful place. Anywhere you are, the key is to be friendly. If you greet everyone – along the beach, as you walk, on the street – you will be amazed at the warm beautiful smiles that will come your way. Showing warmth and love is a sign of respect. Anywhere you go in towns or the city, you’ll also find lots of friendly police about – ask for help if you need it. The apartment, in a nutshell... Just minutes away from the town of Fajardo with ferries to the islands of Culebra (Flamenco's world class beach) and Vieques. Getting to Loiza! Driving Directions from the SJU airport: NOTE: In Puerto Rico is highly recommended to rent a car, public transport is nonexistent and taxi service is expensive. The Address is km 7.0 Rte 187, Mediana Alta, Loiza. 00772 PR. Head north and west from the airport towards San Juan, then very soon take a right (east) on route 187 towards Loiza and Piniones. At the cross roads/rotary, swing left and reverse direction for the 24 hr. Pueblo Supermarket for any needed supplies and drinking water – the tap water is safe and serviceable Then continue east on 187 along the coast for 10 – 12 miles, and cross the Loiza River bridge. Continue to follow 187, and then turn left at the 2nd intersection, then right down the coast (Shell Gas Station). After 4-5 miles, the “Farmacia Mediania” will be on the left. Turn here to the left and you will soon approach the gates to Villas del Mar. Loiza Local Loiza is the location of the 17th century slave auctions, and remains home to many Puerto Ricans of African descent. The old church in the main square is worth a stop on Sunday mornings – it’s been in use since the 17th century, and presides over the square where for generations slaves we auctioned. Further east, near the turn off for the Wyndham resort, is Don Pepe’s, which has excellent local delicacies, as well as mainland favorites, and their own imports of good Spanish wine. Villas Del Mar The complex is still fairly new, and the Developer retains a few of the units unsold. Most are owned by Puerto Ricans for holiday and summer use. Off season, December–April for Puerto Ricans, folks will come for a sunny weekend day, or lay out a party spread for a special occasion. Otherwise, it’s very quiet. The front gate and beach gate are both controlled, and the security guard makes the route a couple of times and hour. This is a nice reassurance. Pinones Area (Near of Villas del Mar) Pinones mangrove forest (Bosque de Pinones) offers a unique experience for tourists and locals alike. We find that almost no matter what we like doing, we can find it and spend an enjoyable day or evening in this area. Even though this area is located just east of the airport and Isla Verde, it seems like a totally different world. There are no high rise buildings or traffic lights. This area is designed for recreation and relaxation. During the day, it offers an 11 kilometer long nature trail/boardwalk that runs through the mangrove forest and along the northern coastline. The boardwalk is open to any non-motorized transportation, though mostly people walk or bike along it. I enjoy walking parts of it, and then stepping off the path and onto the beach, or to look at the rock formations, or the splashing waves coming in, and exploring the tidal pools. You can watch local fishermen catch large sea snails and other things. Biking along the path is very popular with both tourists and locals. There are many places along Road 187 that will rent bikes (usually about $5 per hour). These tend to be “well-used” bikes, but they usually will get you up and down the boardwalk just fine. The trail has no lights, and its use is prohibited at night. There is a place called COPI (a Pinones Cooperative that wants to encourage the Pinones area enjoyment and the Loiza heritage) that has bikes and kayaks for rent. This place is open every day from 9a-4p. When we went, their bikes are in good shape (helmet is included), they sell water and have a clean bathroom available, and gated parking. They rent the kayaks for $10 per person per hour and the route is to kayak out into the mangroves. They also occasionally have Bomba dance classes and shows. Pinones Beach View Another great part of Pinones that we love is the food! There are many places to eat and drink, ranging from dilapidated road side stands to great water-front restaurants. We have eaten at a couple different little shacks for snacks. We occasionally go to The Waterfront restaurant and really enjoy the stuffed Mofongo, as well as the view of the ocean. Soleil Beach club is a few steps away, and we had drinks and appetizers there on another day. They have 2 floors of bars and tables, and a dance floor for nightlife. A great breezy way to spend an afternoon! Bamboobei is also nice. There is even Pipo’s lechonera, where you can get the slow roasted pork that is so popular. Some of the restaurants are closed Monday and Tuesdays, but usually are open for lunch and dinner the rest of the week. There are a few beaches along the boardwalk. The one across from the kiosks is very popular. This area (pozo) is separated from the ocean by a large rock divide. This makes a wide shallow pool to splash around in. It also is a great place to get sea urchin shells, and find a few other types of shells. If you go, be sure to bring a bottle of water, the path is sometimes shaded and sometimes in full sun, and it can get hot! There are gazebos to sit and rest in along the way. Wear bug spray if you are going into the mangroves. There are also road side stores to buy all sorts of vacation needs – hats, towels, sunscreen, some neat PR essentials, like hammocks and mortars and pestles. You can spend some time going from shop to shop. I would plan a stop at a few food shacks for drinks and snacks so you have the energy to keep going! Pinones is the place to be seen for locals on the weekends – especially Sunday afternoons. It comes alive with people and music and dancing. Live bands and musicians appear at various places in the area. This fun goes on long into the night – there are dance floors, pool bars, and all sorts of roadside hangouts. However, traffic congestion comes along with that. Since Route 187 is the only road into and out of this area, be prepared to spend some time in traffic. I am leary of parking far from others and I don’t usually feel comfortable hanging out in this area at night. Use common sense. From San Juan: Take Route 26 east or Route 37 east to Route 187 east and cross the bridge over Boca de Cangrejos You are now in Pinones! COPI is located on the right, just at the east end of the bridge. Swim at your own risk. I only swim in a cove beach in this area. I also am leary of parking far from others or in a secluded area. I try to park by a restaurant, at COPI or in an area with lots of other cars and I never leave valuables in the car. I don’t usually feel comfortable hanging out in this area at night, unless with a group of people. Use common sense. It about only 15minute drive to Pinones from our vacation rental in Villas del Mar Beach Resort. It is just about 10 mins away from Isla Verde. Shopping Puerto Rico has everything from everywhere, from small folkloric shops in old San Juan to the vastness of Plazas Las Americas and the Rte. 66 Outlets. People come from all over the Caribbean and even from South America to shop in Puerto Rico. Just make sure you can get it home! The treasures of Loiza, locally, are just down 187 to the left. You will see the gallery of the local mask-maker, and directly across the street, a sign for Samuel Lind studio Del Arte. Lind is a kind, modest man with an art reputation all over the western hemisphere. He is native to Loiza, raised by fishermen, and lived for time in Paris. He is happy to show you his studio, and prints of his amazing work are available and very modestly priced Just across the street you will find the local mask maker, in the 17th century style from coconut husks. Food shopping is easy: there are large markets on #3 especially the Econo brand in Canovanas, and the Pueblo right of 187 near the airport. We also like the Ralphs supermarket en route to Fajardo to the east. If you must, there is a mega-Wal-Mart in Canovanas, at the intersection of #3 and #188. The Farmacia at the #187 turn off is an easy walk and has good food and general supply items. In the Region There’s a lifetime of exploring for the adventurous! Ponce and Old San Juan are great adventures. Ponce is home to a stunning Edward Durrell Stone designed art museum with octagonal galleries, recently expanded with stunning architecture by local Puerto Rican firms. Huge collection of Puerto Rican, colonial and European art. Old San Juan has great shops, the old forts, museums, and a range of restaurants and cafés. Often there are musical or other events on Sunday afternoons. Vieques and Culebra, by boat from Fajardo or plane from Ceiba Airport, are great fun too. If you go by boat, the schedule is limited, and avoid weekends if you can. By plane you can make a day trip of it quite easily. Adventure to El Yunque El Yunque is a National Forest just 25 minutes away, and has many wonderful trails, waterfalls and views: don’t miss it! This is a glorious place, just a bit east of Rio Grande on rte 3. This is the Caribbean National Forest, with an excellent interpretive center, and many trails ranging from the perfunctory to the fairly challenging. Bring bug repellent and water. There are sanitary facilities and locator maps along the road. When the weather is clear, the views are breathtaking. Plan on a dip in one of the many waterfalls. The air itself is breathtaking too! Luquillo Beach - Balineario Monserate. Past the portal for El Yunque, before Fajardo, you will come to the cut off for this beautiful state-run Beach. One pays to park, and additionally for very nice facilities and showers. The walk out around the headland towards the right (east) is gorgeous, all the way to the water front in Luquillo itself. Fun snorkeling there. At the beach proper, the waters are calm and protected, long swims are possible, and, down the beach a way, kayaks can be rented for a nominal $5. / Hr. Late in the day, the light spreads out over the mountains and cascades down into the bay. On occasion, the famed and endangered Puerto Rican parrots can be spotted overhead. More often, their chatter is all one can apprehend. To the Islands Check the guide books about travel to Vieques and Culebra; ferries leave from Fajardo, and flights via Vieques Airlink depart from Ceiba, south of Fajardo. Both have beautiful beaches, and Vieques is being transformed by a national park effort that encompasses portions for the former military installations. Large tracts of the islands are still off-limits due to unexploded ordinance. At least consider spending an overnight to enjoy the special treats of the Spanish Virgin Islands. A car is necessary in Vieques unless you just take a jitney to sun Beach, and eat down the road. Street food, especially pinchos, chicken or port on a skewer are good everywhere and about $2.50. Bioluminescent Bay There are several outfits running night kayak trips to the bioluminescent bay from Fajardo. This is located near Seven Seas beach in Fajardo, and reservations can be made with one of several tour organizers. Plan early – these are very popular. We suggest the later evening tour, for lower ambient light. It’s can be a wet event, but the kayaking at night through the mangrove to the bay is outstanding! Bioluminescence is also prominent in Vieques and La Parquera on the south coast, but the Fajardo lagoon is sensational. Swimming in the bay is now prohibited due to skin oil pollution. DO NOT take a motor boat ride into any lagoon even if offered. The fuel waste kills the microbial activity that produces the little points of light. Ponce and the South Coast If you have the time, venture to the south, departing from rte 3 on the road to Juncos, and from there, onward to connect to #52 in Caguas. #52 is a beautiful limited access highway that will carry you through the heart of Puerto Rico’smountains and on down the south coast. This is the dryer, hotter, wind side of the island, with much to see. Don’t miss the Art Museum. North of Ponce is the recently discovered ceremonial location of the aboriginal Taino people, whose genetics comprises 17% of the Puerto Rican melting pot, even though the culture has disappeared. Don’t miss this, though it is a bit hard to find. Traveling all the way to Cabo Rojo will treat you to the lighthouse, and also just to the left, a spectacular cove for swimming. All major north coast attractions are a short drive away. Below you will see the approximate transit durations to some of a few places on the neighborhood: St. Regis Bahia Beach Five Star Hotel - 12 minutes Outlet Shopping (Belz) - 15 minutes National Rainforest (El Yunque) - 18 minutes Wyndham Rio Mar Casino - 25 minutes Hipódromo (Horse Track) - 20 minutes Natural Reserve - Las Cabezas de San Juan - 30 minutes Piñones Natural Reserve (Aviones Surfing Area) - 10 minutes VaciaTalega Beach (Pinones Loiza) – 10 Minutes Horseback riding (Hacienda Carabali) - 15 minutes Plaza Las Américas (shopping mall) - 40 minutes Old San Juan (El Morro Fort, Shopping etc.) - 35 minutes Bioluminescent Bay - 30 minutes Luquillo Beach – 25 minutes Walgreens Pharmacy - 15 minutes Walmart Supercenter - 15 minutes Ralph's Food Warehouse - 10 minutes farmacy Mediania (Grocery) - 1 minutes El Sazón de Sylvia - 5 minute We guarantee this property will always be in excellent condition and super clean.
