Many of us dream of sleeping in a museum! Artists dream of staying in such a special place as the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts and many do as part of the Artist-in-Residence program. Now you, too, can stay in this unique and charming place. The apartment is close to great views, restaurants and dining, the beach, and family-friendly activities. This location is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with kids). The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts is located in a beautifully restored historic building that dates back to the 1700's in the quaint and charming town of Frederiksted, located on the west end of St. Croix, Virgin Islands. This sleepy and quiet seaside town offers the perfect cross-section of the island's history, culture, landscape and outdoor activities. In addition to world class art exhibitions, teaching workshops and art studios there are 3 residences to accommodate visitors looking for comfort, culture and natural wonders in a safe and serene setting. CMCArts faces the Caribbean Sea and includes a gated wraparound courtyard, beautifully landscaped and furnished for your enjoyment. The Museum Center is within walking distance of restaurants, cafes, shops, beaches and historic Fort Frederik museum. Frederiksted is truly one of the most picturesque, historic seaports in the Caribbean, it's Victorian architecture and arcaded streets are reminders of a bygone era that produced a vibrant culture. A perfect place for scholars, students and artists as well as those travelers looking for an authentic experience of Danish/American history in a peaceful and relaxing environment. There are many cafes within close walking distance, featuring everything from local fare, to sandwiches, to pizza, to “ital" (vegetarian fare), beach bar food, and fine dining options with fresh seafood and live music. Each of the three residences at Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts has a beautiful upscale kitchen with counters of granite and new appliances as well as all the utensils, pots, pans, dishes and linens that you will need for fine dining inside or out. Each kitchen has a microwave, toaster oven and coffee pot. Internet is available in certain locations throughout the complex. The 1 Bedroom Apt.is located on the second floor balcony overlooks the courtyard and has two twin beds that can be pushed together or separated as desired. It has a beautiful mahogany table and chairs, dresser, closet for hanging your clothes, and all the linens you will need. The bathroom has toilet, sink and shower with space for your toiletries and other items. Plantation shutters adorn the windows to provide shade when needed or full light when desired. The shutter doors secure the studio at night. There are ceiling fans and a floor fan. The view from the balcony is of the courtyard and the rooftops of Frederiksted. The galleries upstairs and down, face the beautiful Caribbean sea. Guests are free to explore the Museum during Museum hours. After hours, guests can enjoy our spectacular old Danish Courtyard The Museum is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 9am to 4pm Frederiksted is both the town and one of the two administrative districts of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. It is a grid-planned city, designed by surveyor Jens Beckfor, originally to 14x14 blocks but built 7x7 to enhance the island commerce in the 1700s. Frederiksted has fewer than 1,000 people in the town proper, but nearly 10,000 in the greater western side of the island. Christiansted (mid-island on the north) is about 30 years older but commerce was limited by its natural, shallow protective reef. Frederiksted was built in the leeward side of the island (shadow of the wind) for calm seas and a naturally deep port. It is home to Fort Frederik, constructed to protect the town from pirate raids and attacks from rival imperialist nations and named after Frederick V of Denmark, who purchased the Danish West Indies in 1754. Frederiksted is often referred to as "Freedom City" by locals. This nickname has to do with the fact that the town was the site of the emancipation of slaves in the then-Danish West Indies. On July 3, 1848, freed slave and skilled craftsman Moses Gottlieb, who also was known as "General Buddhoe," led the uprising, organized slaves on St. Croix's West End plantations, and marched on the town of Frederiksted. The emancipation of slaves was proclaimed on July 3, 1848, at Fort Frederik on the waterfront at the northern edge of Frederiksted by Governor-General Peter von Scholten. Frederiksted is home to one of two deep water ports on St. Croix and is the sole port for cruise ships visiting the island. There are many places within walking distance to the Museum, however to experience the Island, it is recommended that you rent a car. We do not have public transportation
