The Howler Monkey Hideaway is a cozy cedar cabina in the mountains above Dominical. It's located close to both the beaches and many local attractions, yet is a tranquil, cool, safe and natural environment on our communally-owned organic farm. It's the perfect place to unplug from the modern world and immerse yourself in nature. The walls are more than half screen, so you can see outside from anywhere inside the cabina. You're surrounded by the jungle, yet with the simple comforts of home. The Cabina is made primarily of local cedar with a rare purple heart hardwood floor. It features one main living/dining/kitchen space with 2 couch platforms that can also serve as extra beds, plus a dining table with chairs, and equipped kitchen with stove, oven and regular size refrigerator. Two screen doors lead onto an open roofed deck, perfect for yoga, meditation, bird-watching or swinging in the hammocks (provided). There is a small separate bedroom with queen size bed (orthopedic pillow top mattress). The cabina is completely screened and has curtains in the bedroom. The toilet and sink are indoors, and the outdoor shower enclosure (with hot shower) is surrounded by flowers that dance with hummingbirds and butterflies! Everyone loves this outdoor shower (read the reviews :) If you want to relax in nature enjoying the birds and monkeys and the magical sounds of the jungle at night, then this is the perfect place for you. If you like to stay up late playing music or partying, then the cabina might not be the best fit. Your neighbours go to bed early and the work day starts at 6 am, so we observe quiet time after 9:30 pm and appreciate your cooperation with this. The Howler Monkey cabina is perfect for a single person, a couple, or a small family with a child over 5 years of age. The space isn't suitable for young children since the deck has no railing and there are palm trees with spines in the gardens nearby, so they would need to be supervised outside. To access the farm a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. The Howler Monkey Hideaway is located on Fuente Verde, our 50-acre communally-owned organic farm, which provides safe and tranquil surroundings. It is a very clean environment, and perfect for those with environmental, chemical or EMF sensitivities. You are free to hike the trails into the protected primary rainforest that begins less than a hundred yards from your door. Listen to howler monkeys serenading the sunrises and sunsets! Enjoy a dip in our swimming hole or get adventurous and hike down the river. Our farm has water from its own springs and abundant fruit trees. In rainy season waterfalls pour off the face of the ridge next to us, and just a bit further down the valley is Diamante Falls, one of Costa Rica's tallest waterfalls at 600 feet. Another spectacular waterfalls nearby are the Cataratas Nauyaca in Baru (horseback and walking tours available). There is excellent bird watching on the farm: our gardens, trees, ponds and rivers provide ample food and shelter for many of the 860 bird species that live in or pass through Costa Rica. Our Fuente Verde bird count is close to 200 species! Best times for bird watching are from December to April, when the North American migrant species are overwintering here. There is a bird feeder in the garden off the deck that attracts tons of birds and you are welcome to take a plastic chair, park it by a pond and bird watch to your heart's content! To access the farm a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. I live a short drive away from the farm. I have everything ready for your arrival so you can get settled in. Depending on your arrival time I may be there to welcome you, or can stop in another time. There is info at the cabina on how everything works and what's helpful to know to stay comfortably there. I am easy to contact by (Hidden by Airbnb) , phone or email to help with any questions. Fuente Verde is perfectly located in the magical Diamante Valley, midway between the bustling dusty surf town of Dominical on the southern Pacific Coast, and the city of San Isidro de El General, gateway to Chirripo Mountain. So within a short half hour drive you have access to endless beaches, world class surf, or Costa Rica's tallest mountain. There are an incredible number of things to do in the area; local tour companies offer zip-lining, whitewater kayaking, surf lessons, mangrove tours, sport fishing, whale-watching, waterfall hikes & rappelling, plus so much more! So the Howler Monkey Hideaway makes an excellent home base for exploring, and a quiet sanctuary to return to at the end of the day. There are simple grocery stores and restaurants in the nearby village of Tinamastes, about 2 km away. You can get all your basic supplies in Elizabeth's grocery store. Tuesday mornings there is a lively organic Farmer's Market where you can buy locally grown organic fruits & veggies, home baked bread and pastries, kombucha and kimchi, goat & cow milk, cheese & yogurt, nuts, grains, flours & spices, plus prepared food and beautiful arts & crafts. Every Thursday and Friday there is a huge Farmer's Market in San Isidro, 1/2 hour away by car, where you will also find large well-stocked supermarkets and everything else you may need. Getting here and away To best take advantage of your vacation time we strongly recommend renting a car. To access the farm a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. If you don't plan to leave the farm often you can take a taxi here (about $30 from Dominical or San Isidro) and then hire taxis or a rental car for day trips. We have some locals who will drive you to the markets and around the area. There is no public transportation directly to the farm. The nearest daily bus routes and shops are 2 km away and it is a long walk (mostly uphill) on a dirt road that will be either muddy or hot & dusty, depending on the season. It's totally doable, but not necessarily fun more than once or twice unless you are really into fitness! :) To access the farm a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. There is WiFi available. The next closest public internet is in a local restaurant in the village of Tinamastes, about 2 km away. If you don't have a car, getting toTinamastes where the buses, shops and restaurants are is a 2 km walk, mostly uphill on a dirt road, and is not fun more than a couple of times unless you are really into fitness :) We have a local private taxi (Spanish only) who will transport you to or from Tinamastes.
