Built as often as possible from reclaimed, recycled, & beachcombed materials, the Sangan Surf Shack is off-grid and out of this world. Long walks, leisurely lunches, and solid sleeps are all waiting for you here! **The calendar is correct.** Please read ALL the information provided in the Guest Access section before booking/contacting as there are many unusual details of which to take note. The Sangan Surf Shack was built by Richard Haley and Frances Riley in the fall of 2008. It was an exercise in building as organically, cheaply, and quickly as possible. There were no blueprints or plans; rather, this cabin was an evolution that depended on what materials were available and even on the state of the weather. We are excited to share this cosy little piece of Haida Gwaii heaven with you, and hope you enjoy your stay. The cabin is easily accessible by car. It is located approximately fifty steps from the driveway. There is ONLY pedestrian access to the beach through our property (quads/ATVs are NOT permitted on the property). The cabin is well-heated by a woodstove, and there is a propane stove for cooking and propane lights for the evenings. If you are unfamiliar with the use of a woodstove or propane lights and stove, you may want to consider renting other accommodations. There is NO power and NO running water: bathroom facilities include an outhouse and an outdoor solar shower. At this time, drinking water should be brought in, but water for dishes and washing comes from a rainwater collection system. There are two sleeping areas that will fit four average sized adults, with room for more with a little creativity. There is a foamie on one bunk but not on the other; you may also want to bring extra air mattresses or thermarests for your own comfort. WE PROVIDE: dishes, cups, mugs, cutlery, cooking pots and utensils, books, puzzles, a stand-up paddleboard, candles, and a plethora of items you might not know you need until you do. If it’s there, please feel free to use it! As well, if you have a question about whether you need to bring a specific item, please contact us directly. YOU NEED TO BRING: whatever you need for sleeping (bags or blankets and sheets, pillows, thermarest or foamie if desired), food, drinking water, and personal items such as towels and toiletries). Firewood and propane are included in the price of your rental. Please note: the Sangan Surf Shack is based on wilderness cabin principles. There is no chambermaid to fluff your pillow or empty the garbage. You are responsible for leaving the cabin clean and tidy, and packing out all your garbage and left-over food. The Sangan Surf Shack, while charming, is a rustic wilderness-type dwelling, and you may find yourself sharing the space with spiders and mice (especially if you leave food out!). There is also a squirrel who keeps finding a way in but he is more afraid you you than you should be of him. Just chase him out again and all should be well. Please note: the Sangan Surf Shack is based on wilderness cabin principles. There is no chambermaid to fluff your pillow or empty the garbage. You are responsible for leaving the cabin clean and tidy, and packing out all your garbage, recycling, and left-over food. If you are not comfortable using a WOODSTOVE, please consider booking other accommodations. We can arrange for a tutorial but would prefer that you already know what you are doing. If you notice anything not quite right with the cabin (eg. something broken or not working), please let us know as soon as possible so we can replace and replenish for the next guests. Welcome to Haida Gwaii! You’ve chosen well. This misty, moss-hung archipelago is a destination like no other, a place for exploring, adventuring, slowing down, and diving deep. Learn about the vibrant Haida culture, try your hand at surfing, or just unplug and unwind. If you’re looking for an equally unique place to lay your head while you’re on island, the Sangan Surf Shack could be the spot for you. The cabin is located on the northern edge of Haida Gwaii, about 10 km from Masset along Tow Hill Road. We are situated on a two acre piece of beach-front property. Masset is the place to go for all your supplies. There is a government liquor store, a library, a small museum, a hardware store, and a Field's outlet for emergency gumboot purchases. There are three grocery stores - the Co-op, Atwells, and Masset Grocery. The North Beach Surf Shop rents surf boards and wetsuits and provides lessons, and the Ground Gallery and Coffee Shop is an awesome, friendly spot to get a fabulous latte and tap into some wifi. Definitely take a trip out to Taaw Tldáaw to check out the blowholes at high tide and see the sweeping view of North Beach from the summit, hunt for agates and flotsamed treasures on the beach, and explore the amazing mossy forest that is all around. A bird book and star book are great things to bring! It is easiest to get around Haida Gwaii if you have your own transport. There is no public transport out to the cabin. Many people bike the island as there aren't many hills. Check out Go Haida Gwaii online for more information. The Sangan Surf Shack, while charming, is a rustic wilderness-type dwelling, and you may find yourself sharing the space with spiders and mice (especially if you leave food out!). If you are not comfortable with using a woodstove, you may want to consider booking other accommodations.
