Paradise on the Pacific
The house is located on Playa Zancudo, a 6 mile long peninsula protruding into the lower 1/2 of the Gulf of Golfito. Although mostly sheltered from direct open ocean, there is nice surfing, boogie boarding or body surfing right in our back yard. We are approximately 1/2 way down the peninsula on the gulf so a short walk in either direction gets you in bigger waves or smaller waves. Playa Zancudo has approximately 250 Ticos and 200 ex-pats (majority Americans/Canadians with other nationalities. The main house is on the second floor allowing beautiful ocean views and nice breezes. The main living area is screen enclosed and roofed with 3 ceiling fans. It’s an open concept dining/living room/kitchen and hammock area. 2 bedrooms access this space as does a bathroom. There is a studio on the first floor with kitchenette and full bath which is only directly accessed from the outside. It has a separate front and back door to access both the driveway/front yard and the beachside/backyard. The house is 50 meters from the high tide mark which is legally the closest any structure can be. The lot is 50 meters wide x 150 meters long with 50 meters of beach front. We have an open air thatched roof “rancho” or “palapa” just above the high water mark so that you can relax on the beach in the shade. The beach is black sand (volcanic origin) and there is a 13 ft tide difference so at low tide, the beach is huge. Even at high tide there is plenty of beach too. Although Playa Zancudo is a 6 mile long peninsula, the beach extends much further. At low tide you even ride a bike, walk, horseback or ride a car or motorcycle on the beach to Pavones (a famous sleepy surf town known for the second longest right hand break in the world). The peninsula is divided by one large, straight dirt road with houses on the left on the beach and houses on the right backing up to jungle and eventually a mangrove river. The last mile or so to the point has homes that either front or have close access to the mouth of the River. The beachside has a mixture of residential homes and low key small bar/restaurants, most open air with thatched roofs. The famous upscale all inclusive fishing resort named The Zancudo Lodge is 2 miles up the beach. But, for the most part, Zancudo is a sleepy place with small family run restaurants/bars (probably a dozen total), two small Tico owned Bodegas (convenience stores where you can get groceries, liquor, hardware supplies, household items). There is a school, church and police station. We live in the US and vacation here periodically. We have a manager that lives less than a mile down the beach. You will have her phone number. We also have a gardener that is regularly on the premises. The weather here on the southern Pacific coast is generally hot and humid (tropical) with temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The main difference is dry (Dec-May) vs rainy season (June through Nov). It rarely rains in high season. Rainy season means beautiful until 3-5 pm with rain often nightly. Oct through mid Nov is the height of rainy season and the vegetation is lush and flowers are at their peak. Wet season is cooler. Not all bars/restaurants are open but most are.
